GBH SMUUCH WINS ESC CHAMPIONSHIP

In the Championship game SDA Kings started with great half court pressure defence to cause the Smuuch lots of trouble and led at quarter time by 5 points. On the offensive end the Kings also caused problems with Solang Williams and Oscar Page doing the bulk of the scoring.

During the second quarter the Smuuch did a better job of handling the defensive pressure and managed to close the Kings lead to just 2 points at the long break. Daniel Carlos started to get into his best form in the game for the Smuuch team to lead the fightback.

The 3rd quarter was big for the Smuuch and by three quarter time had not only overcome the deficit but led by 52-47. Two big 3 pointers by Isechal Ngiralmau helped them in this regard. In the final quarter it was the Smuuch big inside player in Zymon Asido who dominated and along with the very athletic Daniel Carlos they very much dominated the play to lead the Smuuch to an undefeated season and the Championship.

In the Consolation Final, the first two quarters were a mirror image of each other with the Meyuns Dolphins winning the first and the KES A Stars winning the second with the Dolphins in front by 2 points at half time. The Stars led by the same margin at three quarter time and the scene was set for a thrilling last quarter. The teams certainly did not disappoint their fans as the lead changed back and forwards by just 2 points. Better control by the KES A Stars in the dying moments of the game gave them 3rd place by just 1 point.

The league this year was of far higher standard than previous years with better coaching and much more controlled offence and more pressure defences. This improved standard along with many of the National Junior Men’s Squad players participating means that the future is looking good.

Congratulations to all teams and their coaches on such a good season.
