M15BT DAY ONE

In the opening game Team Palau came up against Team Guahan in what proved to be a close game throughout. Palauheld a slender 2 point lead at the half but Guahan came back to tie the scores at 56 all at three quarter time. In the final quarter the fitness of Palau showed out as they managed a 17 – 9 scoreline to win the game 73-65. For Palau Marvic Ngchar and CJ Olerill had big games while Jason Frias and Dialo Cruz were the main contributors for Guahan.

CNMI faced the might of Guam in the 1.00am game and trailled 12-23 at the first break. Guam’s aggressive extended pressure defence and fast break offence pushed the score out to 55-19 at the long interval. From there it was all Guam as they powered to a 105-39 win over their opponents. Team CNMI came to the tournament with only 7 players and their lack of bench strength stood out in this game. Guam coach, Ruben Payumo was able to rotate his deep bench throughout the game and scoring was evenly spread around.

The first women’s game of the tournament was delayed by a power outage at the end of the previous game and saw Team Guam up against Team CNMI. Guam quickly displayed their dominence in a fast game and led by 21-6 at quarter time. CNMI managed to lift their game in the second quarter but trailled at half time by 43-19. Again the Guam coach, Jonathan Lujan was able to roate his deep bench which resulted in an even spread of points scored. Faced with a 9 player team, CNMI coach Connie Comacho was always up against it in trying to make the game close.

The two Palau teams in Palau and Belau played in the second women’s game at 3.00pm which resulted in Palau winnining comfortably against their much younger and smaller opponents. For Palau Sarabeth Ksano and Diliaur Kumaichi contribued most of the points while for Belau Patty Ucheerkemur, Kayoko Ellis and Savanah Giramur contributed best.

Guahan men had their second game of the day at 5.00pm against the Belau team. The first half was a close encounter with Guahan just ahead by 9 points at half time. In the second half the dominant pressure of the Guahan defence caused many problems for the smaller Belau team and Guahan ran away with a 88-55 win.

The final game of day one was between Palau and CNMI men with both teams having their second game for the day. With greater height but less numbers, the CNMI men stayed close throughout the first 3 quarters but the extra man power and fitness of Team Palu showed up in the 4th quarter and Palau managed to win by 74-53.
