PHS Spiders win ISL Boys varsity hoopfest

Team Palau High School (PHS) Spiders overcame a first quarter blunder as they managed to beat Emmaus High School (EHS) Knights, 91-71 to claim the championship crown of the 2012 Inter-School League (ISL) Boys varsity basketball league, Wednesday at the Palau National gym.

After trailing 14-22 in the first quarter, the Spiders went on a 24-18 run in the second canto to chop down the lead at 38-40. After the half time, the Spiders set up their defense and pave way for them to grab the lead at 62-53 and from there they never looked back to take the win and made history.

PHS claimed all titles in the ISL league, taking the title plum in ISL Junior Boys Varsity, ISL Girls Varsity and the ISL Boys varsity hoopfest.

Chevron Melus and Ray Rumong led the scoring chores for PHS Spiders with identical 16 markers as teammate Edward Baysa chipped in 15. The duo of Shonty Ubedei and Olai Kumangai paved the way for the Knights with 17 and 11 points, respectively.

In the consolation game, PMA Warriors defeated PHS Bubuu, 61-50.

Winners were awarded with specially crafted trophies during the awarding rites immediately after the games supervised by the Palau Basketball Federation (PBF). By Peter Erick L. Magbanua (Island Times News)
