BELAU GAMES DAY 1

In the opening game at 9.00am, Peleliu women took on Sonsorol.  From the first quarter it was evident that the strength of the Peleliu team would dominate and a large lead at the first break showed this.  To their credit the younger and less experienced players from Sonsorol tried valiantly to come back but Peleliu ran out easy winners at 79-37.  For Peleliu Sesengel Ketebengang was the top scorer with 21 and well supported by Edumyle Otobed and Shirley Koshiba with 12.

The 11.00am game saw Ngaremlengui up against Koror.  It  was a tight struggle from the beginning with scores tied at the end of the 1st quarter.  In the second, Ngaremlengui got a break and lead by 5 at the half.   Rosang Melulau and Bebilt Idesmang were doing the damage for Ngaremlengui with 6 a piece.  For Koror, National Youth player Oreng Ngemaes kept them in the game with 6 points.  Koror had a big 3rd quarter outscoring their opponents 17-6 and this set up a great last period.  The lead continued to change back and forth with Koror eventually clinching the win by just 1 point, 51-50.

The 1.00pm was a break with the withdrawal of the Ngarchelong team and gave the administrators and army of volunteers a chance to catch their breath .

Then it was back to men’s games at 3.00pm with Ngaremlengui and Anguar.  The men from Ngaremlengui held sway through the first half with a 42-24 score at the half.  However, the young players from Anguar was not going to give in without a fight and caused some concerns to the opposition coach, Logan Ngiriou with some spirited attack and defence.  In the end the experience of the Ngaremlengui players showed out by winning 84-55.  For Ngaremlengui Jose Meltel and Anthony Rudimech , both National Youth players, showed out with 15 and 10 respectively while for Anguar Arnel Skibang was their top scorer with 17.

In the 5.00pm clash, Sonsorol faced off with Ngchesar in a very even 1st quarter.  Ngarchesar gained the ascendency in the 2nd to lead by 15 points at the long break.  The scoring for Ngarchesar was being evenly distributed with almost everyone contributing.  The 3rd quarter was even and it seemed like Sonsorol may make a big comeback but some cool talking by the Ngchesar coach, Carlos Wasisang  got them back on track to run out winners, 74-53.  Joey Sumor of Sonsorol was the game high scorer with 21 points.

So to the final game of the day with arch rivals Peleliu and Koror doing battle.  In an even 1st quarter neither side gave the other any respite from the continual speed of the game.  In the 2nd period, Koror gained a lead and it looked like Peleliu was heading for its second defeat in two games but to their credit they fought back to be only 6 down at the change to the last quarter.  In the final term Peleliu outran and out muscled their opponent to take the game, 68-59.    There were plenty of sore and tired players at the end of this game as the frenetic pace never stopped.
