BELAU GAMES SEMI-FINALS DAY 7

Koror men obviously learned from their 1 point defeat by Melekeok on Tuesday night by controlling the game from the tip-off.  For much of the game they controlled their usual desire to “run and gun” and played good half court offence.  An excellent start by Koror gave them a 13 point lead at the first break, but Melekeok would not give up and had the game all tied up early in the 4th.  Koror were more patient during the run home and went on to win 79-72.

In the other men’s semi, Peleliu were always in control against a shorter Ngchesar team.  While for Ngchesar it was left to Wade Rdechor, Mekeruul Ueki and Mesikt Benjamin to do most of the scoring, the Peleiu team a more even spread of scorers.  Again both teams chose to play a more controlled game and this lead to less turnovers and fouls.   Now Peleliu have a chance to repeat last Games gold medal win.

In the first semi final for women, Peleiu never looked like being troubled by Ngchesar and lead by an avalanche of scoring by Sese Ketebengang and Sweety Kalbesang it was an easy win for Peleiu to try to repeat their last gold medal win.

Ngaremlengui started as usual in a flying fashion against Koror in their women’s semi final clash.  But as also shown in their games they came back to the opposition by the 4th quarter.  Obviously their coach, Logan Ngiriou does not suffer from heart problems or he would have had several heart attacks during the past week. Oreng Ngemaes of Koror was game high scorer with 22 and for Ngaremlengui Rosang Kelulau had 19.

So to today’s medal games.  In the bronze game at 1.00pm for women Koror take on Ngchesar and the experience for Koror should see them get a win, but with Jubilee Kuartei in the Ngchesar one must expect that anything might happen.

The men’s bronze medal game at 3.00pm should be a good game between Melekeok and Ngchesar with the shorter Ngchesar team always prepared to mix it with the taller teams

The women’s gold at 5.00pm will see the more experienced Peleiu team face the young and less experienced Ngaremlengui team but, with more height they may be able to counter their lack of experience.

In the gold medal game for men at 7.00pm, Peleiu will be seeking to repeat their previous gold medal by defeating arch rivals Koror.   It will be a classic encounter that should have the expected huge crowd “screaming their heads off”.
