Assumption High wins High School boys title

Before hundreds of fans, Assumption High School won the Majuro High School basketball league on Friday, March 23, 2012. AHS won by defeating regular season winner Marshall Islands High School 37-27. MIHS had finished the regular season and playoff play leading up to Friday's game with a perfect 11-0 record, while Assumption was 10-1, its only loss coming against MIHS at the beginning of the season. Solid free throw shooting by AHS and a cold-shooting MIHS team, which managed no field goals and just two free throws in the first quarter, gave AHS a 12-2 first quarter lead. MIHS could not overcome this lead by AHS. Neither team shot well thanks largely to strong defense played by both teams. Internal Affairs Secretary Daisy Alik-Momotaro was on hand to award the second place trophy to MIHS and Coach Mark Stege, and to hand over the championship trophy to AHS and coach Eric Schildge. The league was organized by local high schools with the support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Sports and Recreation Division, the National Olympic Committee and the Marshall Islands Basketball Federation.
