PNG Touch Approach Silver Jubilee

Touch Football in PNG celebrates 24 years of existence in April of this year, with 2009 being the silver jubilee year of Touch Football in PNG as reported on Touch International Federation website.

Touch was played in an organized competition only in Port Moresby in the year 1984 to 1988. Other centers started playing touch around 1989 starting with Rabaul, Lae and Kainantu.

The PNG Touch Federation was born in 1989 with pioneer associations Lae, Rabaul and Port Moresby, being the foundation members. Other associations to affiliate the following year included Kainantu, Goroka, Kimbe, Madang and Porgera Mine in 1990. In 1988 Port Moresby represented Papua New Guinea (PNG) at the first world cup at Carrara Oval, Gold Coast, Australia, and participated in the next 3 World Cup events before a hiatus between 2003-2007. PNG had its first National Championship in Port Moresby between Port Moresby, Kainantu, Lae and Rabaul in 1990.

Their are currently approximatley 10,000 registered Touch players in PNG (as at 2007).
