It was only fitting that with New Caledonia winning the overall Gold Medal tally at these South Pacific Games, that they should also win the last gold medal decided, defeating Guam 71 - 63 in the Men's basketball final.

Samoa defeated Fiji 47-44 in the women's gold medal game. Samoa went into the final with the tournament's highest rebounder Aisha Ale (72 rebounds), while Fiji's Mikaelar Whippy was the tournaments highest pointscorer with 199 points.

Samoa defeated the local Fiji team 76-73 to take the bronze medal. Samoa were the defending SPG Champions, but the Fijian team were the crowd favourite.

New Caledonia women scored a strong 16 point win over Tahiti in the bronze medal play off game. New Caledonia won 68 points to 52.

Guam men will play New Caledonia for the GOLD medal, while Fiji women take on Samoa for the women's GOLD. The bronze games will be between Fiji and Samoa men and Tahiti and New Caledonia.

Tahiti men overcame the young and determined Papua New Guinea to come 5th in the SPG mens tournament. The final score of 72 - 70 indicated the closeness of the game.

Newcomers Kiribati went down to Vanuatu 65-96 to finish the competition in 8th place.

New Caledonia's 97 to 81 win over Tahiti enabled them to take 2nd Place in 'Pool B'and therefore a place in the Semi finals. Tahiti will be playing off for 5th and 6th position...

Fiji women pulled off a 83-68 win over Samoa in an exciting encounter last night.

Tahiti fought hard all the way to beat the 1999 the SPG defending champion Samoa in their second pool play .
