Australia wins U-19 Champsionship 2 games to 0
Behind a 26 point game from Renae Camino, an 18 point contribution from Jenna O'Hea and 17 points from Christina Fox, the Australian Gems proved too strong and too experienced for the New Zealand Junior Tall Ferns tonight at Melbourne's Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium.
While the New Zealanders put up a gallant fight, the Australians took the scoring honours in each quarter of the game and took charge of all the important parts of the game as they racked up a 96 to 46 scoreline to win the 2004 FIBA Oceania Championship.
Micaela Cocks lead the scoring for New Zealand with 17 and was the only Kiwi to reach double figures. The New Zealanders were 2 of 18 from behind the arc and only shot 31% for the game . They were also out rebounded by the Australians 53 to 34. Those numbers don't contribute to a winning scoreline.
On the positive side the New Zealanders drew respect from the large crowd on hand and from their opponents with their commitment and the intensity of their effort to the final hooter. It is clear that the development work taking place in New Zealand is starting to change the player's approach to the game.
Australian basketball legend Ray Tomlinson was on hand to present the medals to the participants and once again an Oceania Championship concluded with the playing of the Australian National Anthem.
