Over 350 women, men and children from a good cross section of the community turned up at the Bidesi Park on Saturday 24 October in support of the Breast Cancer Awareness week, organised by FASANOC's Women in Sport Commission, sponsored by the IOC and supported by the Ministry of Health and Colgate-Palmolive Fiji Limited.
Also to support the walk was FASANOC President Vidhya Lakhan and our very popular Acting President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, representatives from the WHO and members of the MOSO group who are here from around the Oceania region for their sporting course which included Mrs. Rosie Blake the Chairperson of the Women in Sport Cook Islands.
Under very pleasant weather conditions the walkers took to the road after a ten minute warm-up of aerobics led by Mrs. Litiana Miller. At 6.30a.m. the walkers led by the Acting President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau walked out of Bidesi Park along the seawall to the Veiuto junction and back to the Park. Upon the return by everyone a brief warm down session was held after which an enjoyable healthy breakfast was served.
During breakfast the following speakers addressed participants:
• Juliette Fleischl from the WHO on her experience as a survivor of breast cancer for the past 2 years
• Dr Mary Schramm also spoke as a survivor and as a doctor
• Dr. Naaz from the Oxfam clinic on the importance of regular checkups
To conclude the programme participants were invited to a game of Baseball or the old fashioned game of Pani.
Women in Sport would like to thank the International Olympic Committee, Oceania Women in Sport, Ministry of Health, Colgate-Palmolive, Fiji Water, COLONIAL, Fiji Sports Council and FASANOC for making the Breast Cancer and Health Awareness Walk very successful.
