Samoa Swimming Federation (SSF) held its Nationals and Annual General Meeting last weekend, November 22. The focus of the meeting was to address the upcoming hosting of the Oceania Championships. The new Federation board was elected with key members from the swimming community as well as the community at large to support the planning efforts. The Executive members continuing on include the President, the Honourable Prime Minister, Tuileapa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegoai; Vice President Karen Nelson and Treasurer Kerrie Punivalu, who has also agreed to subsume the secretary position under her responsibilities. New board members include Sonya Hunter, who is also the CEO of the Samoa Tourism Authority, Chikara Yoshida, who is the Engineering Manager for the aquatic centre, Cedric Schuster and Palolo Seiuli. As a show of support and a desire for continuity for preparations for the Championships, the Federation passed a constitutional amendment to keep this board in until after Oceania 2010.
Plans for the championships are ongoing. While waiting to finalise dates for the events, SSF has been working with the Samoa Aquatic Centre to ensure all safety and technical aspects are in place for the competitions. Hotel and catering contracts are also in the works as we wait for the final dates for the events.
The new board is excited about the work ahead and next steps have been identified and discussed for the coming months. We will send along updates as new information becomes available.
