Samoa Cricket Hosts Kiwi Guests

Representatives from the New Zealand Blind Cricket Team and Manukau South Sports Club visited Samoa during June to promote Blind Cricket in Samoa. This was the third visit for some of the cricketer’s who have continually pushed the development of blind cricket in the Pacific.  “The local blind community have made a lot of improvement since we were here last time in August.   We want them to set goals and directives and with the help of Tina Macumber (General Manager of the Samoa International Cricket Association) and us (Manukau South Sports Club). We will be able to find the direction where blind cricket in Samoa will go.”  The two week visit included two cricket clinics held by the New Zealander’s at the Garden Cricket Ovals in Tuanaimato.

A Twenty20 cricket match was also played with NZ defeating Samoa 55 NZ 6/60 off 9 overs. It was a great effort by the Samoan’s, playing in their first ever official cricket match. The blind and visually impaired people of Samoa are continuing to train once a month with the hope of raising enough funds to compete in Auckland against other local blind cricket teams during Easter 2010.   In blind cricket a plastic ball the same size as a cricket ball is used which has beads inside to help the player’s track where the ball is going.
