2009 HOCKEY GRAND FINALS
The Busselton hockey season finished with three days of exciting Grand Finals on the weekend.
The finals round began on Thursday night with the Veterans Grand Final between Wests and Cougars. Wests defeated Cougars 6-2 in a wet and cold night game. Andrew Spencer-Wright was awarded F&B in the final and Rob Stainton F&B for the season.
The Under 16s boys and girls finals were played on Friday. The night started with the girl’s game with Countrys defeating Wests 7-2. Countrys celebrated in style with a very messy Powerade scene in the changerooms afterwards! The boy’s game was an outstanding win for Wests over Cavaliers, winning 8-1. F&B in the grand finals were Danika Jurat and Giles Spencer-Wright, and for the season Alex Baxendale and Tye Hoystead.
There were six finals played on Saturday, starting with the Under 13s. The boy’s game saw Wests defeat Capel 5-1, with Jayson Bright winning man of the match. The girl’s game was a thriller between Wests Black and Wests Red, with the score level at full time. The game went to strokes and Wests Black won 3-1, with Chloe Carter winning the F&B award for the game. Jemma Green and Michael Roberts won the Season F&B awards.
Other awards given out to juniors on the weekend included the Just Hockey Best Club Person award, presented to Zach Carter and Shannon Koch for their dedication to the game of hockey. Zach and Giles Spencer-Wright were also awarded the Best Junior Umpire awards by umpiring mentor Stan Bibra.
The local A2 games were the highlight of the day. After coming runners-up last year, Margaret River women defeated Wests Black 3-1. The girls had a great celebration afterwards. The men’s game between minor premiers Wests and their all-year rivals Capel was a draw 2-2 at full time. The game went to strokes and the teams went shot for shot until Capel came out victorious, 4-3. Fran Davies and Vin Scott were presented the best on ground awards, and Cheryl Guthrie and Rob Lord were awarded season F&B.
This year it was Busselton’s turn to host the South West League finals, which saw Bunbury teams Marist and Boyanup playing in both the men's and the women's games. The women's game ended in a low-scoring 1-0 win to the blue and white Marist girls. The heat was on in the men's match, with scores level at 3-all at full time. The game went to extra time and Boyanup scored the winning goal to win 4-3.
John Carter, the Director of Juniors, was awarded the Steve Jenkins Memorial Trophy, which is presented to the person who has shown the most dedication and commitment to the association and the junior competition.
