Field Closures and Game Postponements

It is very frustrating for all concerned that games and training sessions are being cancelled this early in the season. It is important that everyone understands the process to avoid confusion and further frustrations.

WHO'S DECISION IS IT TO CANCEL
Whether teams play or don't play is a decision that is made jointly between the respective councils (Rodney, NSCC and Waitakere) and US1.  The council makes calls on which grounds are playable between 6am and 7:30am or earlier depending on conditions. This may mean that they restrict the number of games for that day or close all grounds altogether. US1 (the football Federation who runs the competitions) then decides which games will or won't go ahead. In a few instances the club may make a decision if weather is torrential to cancel midgets but this is the only exception.

WHY Grass protection - the councils are trying to ensure that the fields last for the whole season. If they are cut up - the ability for them to recover is difficult. With football, the surface needs to be relatively smooth and not too wet for the ball to run along (unlike Rugby where the ball is carried). If teams have trained on closed pitches during the week - the council will restrict matches on the weekend as a result - so please DON'T train if requested not to or if the fields are closed by the Rodney District Council.

PROCESS FOR NOTIFICATION For changes to fixtures go to the changes to weekly fixtures section under the Fixtures/Results section on the HBCAFC website. Click on the link for your competition to see what changes might affect your grade/team. This is posted here by 4pm on a Friday afternoon. If changes to fixtures (game times/locations) are made after 4pm on Friday - US1 ring HBCAFC and notify us directly. The relevant people will then ring the grade conveners and/or team managers affected in time priority order. If you are not sure what changes affect you, check the relevant websites first for information that affects your team, if in doubt call your team manager/coach and also try the US1 website for updates. Please listen to Newtalk ZB from 6am on a Saturday morning to catch the cancellations broadcasts that happen regularly during the morning regarding ground closures. If the grounds are closed your game will be postponed as the council over rules all. If midgets are cancelled then a notice will be posted on the HBC AFC website, and a cancellation message will be broadcast on Newstalk ZB before 8am on the day.

We are working really hard as a Committee (we are parents too) to improve things and trust us we want our children to play and the club spirit to be great.

SMALL WHITES & JUNIORS NEWSLETTER June 2009

SMALL WHITES & JUNIORS NEWSLETTER June 2009
We are rapidly approaching the middle of the season and so far so good. It is time to get some information out to you all.

CLARRIE MORGAN TOURNAMENT
In 1974 Bob Jones and Clarrie Morgan founded the Hibiscus Coast AFC. The initial ground was at Victor Eaves Park. For many years now we have run the 9th Grade Clarrie Morgan tournament. It is very popular and this year is being held on Sunday 5th July at Stanmore Bay (the rain day will be 19th July). The day starts at 8.30 AM and 16 - 20 teams from all over Auckland compete each year. It is a showcase of football talent at this age so please come down and support it. Parents of children to be involved are included in the organisation but if you can help with setting up the goals, nets and tents initially for an hour or two please contact Sandy Lochhead on 021838122.

TEAM PHOTOGRAPHS
This year we have secured the services of ‘Mark Moore Photography’ and Photos will be taken at the clubhouse between 4.00pm and 6.30 pm on Tuesday 23, Wednesday 24, and Thursday 25 June. Photos times are allocated in 5 minutes intervals and by now you should have already booked your timeslot. If not, please e-mail elaine.morley@xtra.co.nz, to book a time and we will endeavor to accommodate you as best we can.

REGISTRATION FEES
The club has been actively chasing any outstanding fees and is enforcing a strict ‘no pay, no play’ policy in fairness to those players who have already paid. Each player must have their registration paid in full and coaches now have details of any players in their team with outstanding fees who are to be stood down until payment has been made. If you know of any other players who are not registered or not paid up in full, please bring them to the attention of the club. Payment can be made at the Tuck Shop on Saturday morning, at the bar on Saturday afternoon (Eftpos available), by sending a cheque payable to HBC AFC to PO BOX 492, Silverdale, Whangaparaoa 0944 or by Internet Banking, the payment must state:
Players First name and Surname (e.g. John Brown) and Date of Birth (ddmmyyyy).
Bank - ASB Bank HBC AFC Account No. - 123084 0257746 00

GOALS & NETS
Thanks to those parents that take on the task of setting up fields each week on game days. Please remember to remove the junior goals from the field sides and also to move them to the side after any practice sessions. Please avoid dragging them across the ground. Nets must go back into the containers provided. For the full size fields, please make sure you use the correct bin (eg; Field 4 for Field 4) and the gear is brought in if there is no game on after yours. If on a training day you move any of the senior goals into the field please ensure these are moved back to the goal areas.

SHIN PADS
Shin pads are compulsory for all players and strict enforcement of the ‘no pads, no play’ rule is required by coaches to protect your players from injury.

FLOODLIGHTS
After training the floodlights must be physically turned off at the switch (located near to large white box at bottom of the middle floodlight pylon) even if the lights do go off automatically. This is due to the timer setting and means the lights may come back on again during the day. We can all help keep costs down by taking care of the facilities provided.

RESULTS
Please ensure that after your game you confirm the score with the opposition team and e-mail your results to results@hbcafc.org.nz by 5:00pm on game day. When sending your email please include team name, division and coach name as the subject line. DO NOT leave this blank! Then, in the body of the message type win or loss followed by the score as seen in the example below:
Subject - Hibiscus Coast 10B (Wairau Division) Coach (Coaches Name)
Message - Win - 2-0

CLUB CLOTHING SALES

Orders for jackets, caps and beanies with the HBC Logo can be placed through the Tuck shop on a Saturday morning. Shorts and socks are in stock. For shin pads and boots you may contact our kit supplier, Dynamic Sports – 09-4281364, tell them you are an HBCAFC Club member and receive a 10 % discount.

VOLUNTEERS
The club is always on the lookout for volunteers to assist in any way possible with the day-to-day running of the club. Your involvement could range from putting the goals in/out, organising or coaching a team, to becoming a member of the Junior Committee. If you are able to devote a little of your time and are interested in being further involved we would love to hear from you!

MIDGETS DEVELOPMENT COACHING
The Club will be running a coaching session for 6th, 7th and 8th grade players nominated by their coach as being those with potential/skill above others. This is to ensure we are developing those with skills and a desire to play football at the highest competitive level in the future. The session start dates and times will be advised by our Director of Coaching. They are run by Dion with the assistance of Club coaches and are fun based, and concentrated on ball skills. Nominations of players can be sent to Dion at e-mail whitemetal@xtra.co.nz

MIDGETS & JUNIOR PRIZEGIVING
This will be held this year at the Whangaparaoa Primary School hall in Ladies Mile, Manly on Saturday 19th September. Coaches need to start thinking now about their awards: Best Attitude & Effort (Small Whites), Most Improved and Player of the Year (Juniors). We also need to hear about your Coach for Coach of the Year. Nominations will be sought in late July.

Yours in Football,
Tel Sheehy
Junior Club Captain

Swine Flu (H1N1) Procedure from US1

SWINE FLU ALERT

The 1918-20 Spanish Influenza pandemic infected an estimated 500 million people (a third of the world’s population at the time) and killed an estimated 40-50 million people worldwide including 12,000 Australians and more than 8,000 New Zealanders.

The recent outbreak and news frenzy over H1N1 (aka Swine Flu) has been compared to the Spanish Influenza pandemic and whilst official reports are not predicting a recurrence of 1918, all the people in the know say this one is not going away, and it’s on our doorstep -  Australia has the 4th highest number confirmed cases.  The World Health Organisation (WHO) is considering elevating the status of the current pandemic alert to 6...
The current WHO phase of pandemic alert is 5.

Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.
Phase 6, the pandemic phase, is characterized by community level outbreaks in at least one other country in a different WHO region in addition to the criteria defined in Phase 5. Designation of this phase will indicate that a global pandemic is under way.
In New Zealand the Ministry of Health (MoH) has a 5-stage pandemic plan, and we are currently operating in the ‘red zone’ with cluster control to minimise the spread of the virus by reducing human-to-human contact of known and suspected cases.  Border controls, however, are limited, so there is a fair chance more cases will come into NZ from overseas.

All this is common knowledge, but the purpose of this communication is to suggest what we, involved in football, can do to help.

A. Spread the word, not the disease!

Firstly, like schools and workplaces, we have a responsibility to assist with the dissemination of information on personal hygiene and actions that need to be taken to minimise the risk of spread when human-to-human contact is not avoidable.

1. Avoid close contact.

Minimize or avoid completely close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.  A one metre radius ‘personal bubble’ is recommended by the World Health Organisation.
2. Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Do not go to training or matches as a player, coach or spectator.  Your team can manage without you till you are better!
3. Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and dispose of the tissue straight away afterwards. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
4. Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often with soap or an alcohol-based handrub will help protect you from germs.  Wash them after using a tissue, and after being in contact with potentially contaminated people or surfaces.
5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
6. Practice other good health habits.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

In particular, this H1N1 strain is often borne and therefore spread in the good old fashioned coughs and sneezes way.  “Potentially infective respiratory droplets” (WHO’s description) are expelled by sneezing, coughing or even just speaking, so keep your distance if you can.

I would urge you to use your own communications channels, eg email distributions to coaches and players, to help send the message.  In particular, people should stay away from training and games if they are sick – that’s the best way they can help their team!!

B. MoH Prohibition of Mass Gatherings?

Secondly, as organisers of a high-participant sport with necessarily high levels of close human-to-human contact we also have to keep an eye on what part we need to play in the current regime of cluster control.  We also need to be aware of any escalation of pandemic status from WHO or MoH and take appropriate actions whether recommended or legislated.

It is conceivable that a future escalation of the pandemic status could see schools and colleges closed, and in that case organised sport for the same groups of young people would likely be included in measures to minimise the spread.

If such measures are introduced then clearly US1 will play its part and cancel organised fixtures for any necessary period.  If that happens, it would obviously make no sense to continue with trainings, and clubs would be expected to cancel all internal activity and in-house club programs as well.

C. Remind Returning Travellers to Keep the Rest of Us Safe

Finally, with the school holidays coming up, there will be a surge in numbers travelling to Australia and beyond.  This will bring an increase in the numbers of New Zealanders directly exposed to Swine Flu, and returning to New Zealand.

It is not our primary role to control their activities and contacts when they return, but it could clearly have an impact on how we behave.  If there is any doubt about the health status of people returning from an overseas trip, missing a game or a training until they are definitely cleared as not-infected could help prevent unnecessary spread of Swine Flu.

We sincerely hope that Swine Flu will not curtail organised football activities at all, but we must be ready to do that if it becomes necessary.  To reduce the chances of the pandemic status reaching that trigger-point, spreading the personal hygiene and behaviour information above would be appreciated.

HBCAFC Note

"As far as we aware there are no known cases of swine flu amongst the players, coaches or supporters at HBC AFC. Therefore, at this moment in time, we do not see any reason to prevent any player from joining their team. If this situation changes we will inform all coaches as soon as possible."
