NAIDOC Celebrations

WEFNC together with our incorporated association, the Spaces Outdoor Community incorporation are heading up a family day at the footy to celebrate the closure of “ Naidoc Week” on Saturday July 11th 2009.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.  The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. NAIDOC originally stood for 'National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee'.  This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.

In 2009 the WEFNC has embraced many aboriginal players and welcomed the families into the Colac and District Football and Netball community. We are delighted to take this opportunity to further recognise the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.  The Colac and District Football and Netball Association have fully supported our planned events on Saturday 11th July.  There will be ceremonies to mark the opening and closing of both the Senior Football and Netball matches, commencing at 1.30pm and 2.30pm respectively.  This will include the raising of the respective flags, welcoming by local Aboriginal elders, and live Koori music. A large section of our Indigenous community, invited dignitaries and AFL players have already indicated that they will be attending.

All members, players and friends are invited to be at the Irrewillipe Recreation Reserve to join in the celebrations and show your support.  Donations can be made to the foundation or purchase a pair of football or netball socks.
