Rams win thriller
June 30 2009
Deniliquin Pastoral Times IT wasn't pretty football, but the Deniliquin Rams escaped a boggy Congupna ground with a thrilling two-point win on Saturday. Star onballer Sam Lloyd, already enjoying a stellar season, broke two tackles to kick a match-winning 40m goal with only about five minutes left on the clock. Congupna's Adam Brassil had a chance to steal victory with a shot almost directly in front of goals from only about 20m out. Brassil was awarded a free kick, but squandered the chance to give the home side victory. Deniliquin held on to the lead in a heartstopping final few minutes. Final scores: Deniliquin 10.10 to Congupna 10.8. Rams coach Gary Parsons said he was pleased with his side's efforts. The Rams are now eighth on the Murray Football League ladder with a 6-5 win-loss record. "It was one of those days where you're just happy to come away with a win, no matter what the margin," Parsons said. "We knew we really had to win this match to stay in the hunt for finals and the boys responded with a gritty victory. "Our blokes were willing to put their heads over the ball and win the footy, which was pleasing. "Overall our discipline was a lot better this week." The first term was actually a free-flowing affair with the dry Sherrin. The visitor's kicked 5.3 to The Road's four straight goals. Deniliquin looked the better of the two sides and in the second term the Rams extended their lead to 13 points. But the home side was far from done. The Roaders slotted four goals from at least 10 attempts as the Rams struggled to defend the scoring end in the third term. Several Rams flooded Congupna's forward fifty to keep the damage to a minimal while hanging out for the three-quarter-time break. The home side managed to snare a onepoint buffer by the last change and extended it further with a goal early in the fourth stanza. The Rams attacked at every opportunity but it wasn't until the 26 minute mark that Lloyd found some space and finished. Lloyd, Leigh Marshall and Anthony Bull finished each kicked two important goals for the Rams, however the two stand-out performers were Simon Maher and Ben Seignior. Maher was the best player on the ground from a back flank, repelling many Road attacks. It was not a vintage Seignior performance, but the key forward played all over the ground and did a lot of hard work, winning the ball in the clinches. Other good players for the Rams were onballers Ash Parsons and Sean Moodie, ruckman Jason Webb and defender Jarrod Tonta. Parsons showed class with the wet footy, while Moodie and Webb gave plenty of grunt in pack situations. Tonta did a fine job as a key defender against Congupna big man Josh Wilson. Congupna's best were Tyson McKenzie, Ben Wellington and Will O'Sullivan. Shannon Emmett kicked three goals for the home side and was always dangerous when near the ball. The Rams reserves let a 15-point half time lead slip on Saturday. The locals were chasing their fourth consecutive victory, but could not finish off a promising start. Scores, Congupna 8.12 (60) to Deni 6.4 (40). Mobile big man Harvey McKinnon was Deni's best with two goals. Other good players were the Rams' onball brigade of Shaun Connor, Tyson Arentz, Jamie Chadderton, Andrew Hogan and Shannon Williams.
Rams robbed

Deniliquin Pastoral Times
A LACK of discipline cost the Deniliquin Rams victory over Numurkah in round 11 of the Murray Football League on Saturday. According to coach Gary Parsons, his players got "too carried away" with umpiring decisions and lost focus at the Hardinge St oval. The locals produced a spirited performance in the final term, but it wasn't enough as the Blues ran away with a nine-point win. Final score: Numurkah 14.2 (86) defeated Deniliquin 11.11 (77). Numurkah kicked three goals to Deniliquin's one in the opening quarter. Despite inaccurate shots on goal, the Rams fought back to trail by just three points at the main break. The visitors bagged six goals in the third stanza and led by 29 points heading in to the last term. But the Rams weren't going down without a fight. The locals snared seven majors in the final term. "We had a good last quarter, but we were very undisciplined throughout the game, which ultimately cost us the match," Parsons said. "We had some disappointing umpiring decisions go against us, which was very frustrating. "It caused a few lapses in concentration and took the focus off our game," he said. Numurkah was awarded two `double free kicks' during Saturday's match - one in the first term and another in the fourth. It effectively resulted in a gifted four goals. "You rarely see one (double free kick), let alone two in one match. It's very frustrating as a coach," Parsons said. "It was a game we really should have won. "As well as some of the decisions against us, we also had far too many skill errors." Sam Lloyd and Leigh Marshall both kicked four goals each for Deni, while Jono Atley, Anthony Bull and Ash Parsons claimed one apiece. Parsons, Lloyd, Geoff McCallum, Bull, Nick Howe and Kamen Ogilvie were named as the better players. The Rams had a good 55-point win in the reserves. Final score: Deni Rams 10.11 (71) def. Numurkah 1.10 (16). David Landini snared three goals for the locals, Pat Eames kicked two, while Josh Phillips, Rob Barnes, Jamie Chadderton, Andrew Hogan and Tyson Arentz bagged one each. Best for Deni were Hogan, Chadderton, Shannon Williams, Eames, Tom Edwards and Arentz.
Old foe too good for Rams

Deniliquin Pastoral Times
THE Deniliquin Rams have slipped to seventh on the Murray Football League ladder after a 25-point loss to old foe Nathalia on a wet track on Saturday. The Rams let Nathalia forwards Dick Liddell and Ross Garner dominate early as the Purples kicked five straight goals to start the match. Deniliquin held sway with the Purples for the remainder of the game as the rain came tumbling down. However, the damage had been done and the Rams could not bridge the gap. Scores, Nathalia 15.4 (94) to Deni 11.3 (69). Deniliquin coach Gary Parsons said he was disappointed with his side's performance. "Our blokes just aren't listening to their instructions and it cost us in the first term. "We fell behind and never really recovered." The Purples had multiple options in attack with David Liddell and Mathew Elborough kicking three goals apiece. Leigh Marshall led all Deniliquin goalkickers with four. Nathan Gemmill returned to his best form with a superb game in the midfield and Ricky Barnes and Ross Garner were other standouts for the home side. Troy Snelson, a triple Nathalia premiership player, showed plenty of his customary dash on the wing similar to the form which saw him named best afield in last year's grand final win. Deniliquin's best were thirds player Oliver Maddison in defence, Sam Lloyd with two classy goals and Tom Draffin in the midfield. Other valuable contributors for Deni were Steve Tonta in defence, Simon Maher in the midfield and Sam Hall up forward. The Rams have lost four of their past five matches. The club's reserves side had a better day beating Nathalia by 23 points. Veteran recruit David Landini bobbed up with four goals to be the catalyst behind the win. Jamie Chadderton was best-on with two telling goals from the midfield. He had strong support from Tyson Arentz, Shannon Williams, Mark Panton and Eddie Draffin.
Marshall kicks 7 in Rams win
June 9 2009 Deniliquin Pastoral TimesVETERAN forward Leigh Marshall booted seven goals to help Deniliquin snap a three-game losing streak against Rumbalara on Saturday at the Hardinge St Oval. The former Sydney Swan was in vintage form marking strongly overhead and just as effective at ground level. Rams skipper Anthony Bull, in his 100th match for the club, chimed in with four goals from centre half forward to lead his charges to a much needed victory. Four-time Rams premiership star Ben Seignior also made a welcome return with two goals from the forward flank. Seignior relocated back to Deniliquin from Perth last week and was a standout in his return match. "(Seignior) looked a little nervous early, but once he settled in he quickly showed why he is such a damaging player," Rams coach Gary Parsons said after the match. "He gave the side a real lift just by being there, which is what we needed after three losses on the trot." But Deniliquin did not have the match all its own way and at half time the home side trailed by 21 points. The Rams opened the match with five straight goals before Rumbalara hit back with eight of the next nine goals scored. Rams coach Parsons was obviously annoyed and at half time let his players know about it. The Rams responded with a six goal third term with Troy Bartlett, Marshall and Oli Maddison getting their hands on the ball through the midfield. Bull remained strong in the air while Jarrod Tonta dominated the ruck contests. The Rams finished with five goals to Rumba's four in the last term to run out threegoal victors. In the reserves, the Rams beat Rumba by 33 points. Tyson Arentz and Jamie Chadderton were the home side's better players with help from Pat Eames, Tom Edwards and Liam Walker in his first game for the club.
Seignior selection
June 5 2009 Deniliquin Pastoral TimesDENILIQUIN Rams coach Gary Parsons may produce a surprise selection for his side's round nine clash with Rumbalara tomorrow. Four-time premiership forward Ben Seignior was expected to train with Deniliquin last night after returning from a year in Perth, and could be rushed straight back in. After winning the first four games of the year, then dropping the last three on the trot, Parsons said he would certainly be tempted to include the enigmatic left-footer. Seignior was an integral part of the Rams' four straight flags from 2001-04 under coach Parsons. The 27 year-old played with North Fremantle last season. "It would depend on whether or not Ben is ready to play," Parsons said yesterday afternoon. "He's been training in WA and if he's fit the temptation (to play him) is certainly there. "We'll see how he goes tonight (Thursday training) and then assess our options." Last week, Deni's opponent Rumbalara downed Finley by 132 points in just its second win of the season. Brayden Williams kicked six goals for Rumba and will need to be watched closely, while Josh Wanganeen and Wade Austin were back to their running best. Rumbalara assistant coach Josh Atkinson said his is on the improve. "We started to move the ball really well and run. It's something we haven't been doing well, so hopefully this (a win against Finley) was the spark we needed. "We can't get too carried away, but we can build on this and refocus on the match against Deniliquin." Hard running defender Simon Maher will return to the Rams' lineup after a couple of weeks out with a broken finger. Luke Moodie (hamstring) had to prove his fitness on the training track last night, while reserves players Shaun Connor, Tom Edwards and Jason Webb are all in the mix for a senior call-up to the Rams' injury depleted side. Connor and Edwards are both run-with players impressing in the twos, while ruckman Webb was a stand-out in his debut for the club last week against Mulwala. Deni will most likely lose defender Geoff McCallum with a hamstring strain and fellow backman Louis Clarke is battling an ankle complaint. Deniliquin still has five key onballers - Ash Parsons (knee), Sean Moodie (shoulder), Brad Robson (ankle), Brad Haines (hand) and Ben Bartlett (knee) - on the sidelines, but is slowly getting some of its key personnel back, according to Parsons. "Ash and Brad are back doing a bit of light work on the track, which is great. Sean isn't too far away either." Despite the injuries Deniliquin should still have too much class for Rumbalara - wet weather or dry - on the spacious Hardinge St Oval. Nathan Holahan selects: Rams by 10 goals.
