The Parrots are back on the winners list with a come from behind victory against Warragul at Western Park.
In what Butch Hemming described as described as a "typical old Leongatha/Warragul belt the crap out of each other and have a beer afterwards game", there was little in the match throughout its' entirety, that had a lot of moments that rate a mention.
First was the red carding of a Warragul defender after an incident away from the ball involving Dwayne Holt, which resulted in the Parrot's first goal of the game. Not long after that, the Gulls star centreman Ryan Davey tore a hamstring and was gone for the day.
The second quarter saw an unusual head count where no one, including the umpires were sure what the ruling was on replacing a red-carded player. "Just keep playing and we'll get back to you after half time" was the response from the umpires, it turns you can replace a sent-off player after twenty minutes.
A stirring third quarter saw Leongatha peg back over a 4-goal deficit by nailing six in row to come out in front at the final break.
The final quarter created a great climax with Warragul coming back hard and being unable to capitalise on a number of chances. A scuffle broke out after a Paul Fawcett shirtfront rendered a Warragul player out of action in the dying minutes. With less than thirty seconds to go and two points in it, the Gulls had victory within their grasp as a player ran into fifty and steadied but was run-down from behind, the ball spilt free and was transfered quickly up field where Holt marked on the siren and kicked the last of his eight goals.
The youngsters keep producing the goods for the Parrots: Tom Marriot, Sam Sperling and first-gamer Todd Mackie really stepped up and were instrumental in assisting the side win their first game in a month.

If you have had a look at the results of last Saturday's matches already you would think that the Leongatha boys are going down that well-trodden path that it has trudged along in the past 4 years. The feeling within the club couldn't be further from the truth.
The "bad month" of performances are on a slow climb up after going down last Saturday in a game where the score didn't indicate the competitiveness of the contest. For the first time this year, Dwayne Holt didn't have his kicking boots on, but he wasn't alone as almost the entire foward line had their opportunites and squandered them on their way to a final score of 4-11.
All other indicators bar centre clearances show that the contest was an extremely even one that, had the parrots taken their chances, the game would have gone right down to the wire.
Again, despite the scoreline their were great performances across the ground with Mark Coghlan showing that he's up there with the most improved players in the competition this season, Jack Hughes, in his best performance for the year, making country football gun Matt Forys earn every one of his four goals and Clint Johnston taking a heap of contested marks across half forward.
The boys responded well to a solid week on the track and can probably expect more of the same this week as every player in the senior playing group "stick fat" and work hard for the Leongatha FC to be there when the whips start cracking for a final's position.

Any Leongatha supporter reading this at home or abroad would be well advised to avoid reading any results from the weekend as the senior game was one that players and spectators will be trying to erase from their memory as quickly as possible to try and prepare for the upcoming match against Moe.
Outclassed in every position on the ground, the maroons looked in a different league to the parrots, who, in welcoming five key players back in the side looked slow, underdone and underprepared. Positives to come from the home side was Dwayne Holt's unwavering form at Full-Forward, and no major injuries came out of the game.
Most sides have a bad month of football somewhere during the season, and while this is definitely it for Leongatha, how it responds as a club will be the true test of character that shapes this season that is not over yet, not by a long shot!

For the last ten years , the litmus test for any Leongatha side has been the trek to Maffra, and for those same ten years, the result has been the same.
Leongatha were soundly beaten in 3 of the four grades apart from a heart-stopping draw in the reserves. In the main game, Leongatha posted the first goal through come back kid Jamin Heppel, but that was where the competiveness started and ended in a day where the top side pulled away from the rest of the pack.
According to local eagle supporters, Maffra hit their straps on Saturday against a depleted parrot outfit currently reeling from injuries to important players. To make matters worse, they were left with no bench and two injured players that could barely run on the ground in the last quarter, which was when "happy hour" really kicked in for the home side.

Having painted a fairly gloomy picture, there is still plenty of upside to take away from Saturday. Dwayne Holt is doing an amazing job at Full-forward given limited opportunities, his five goals in a total of seven gives an indication of the impact he's made so far this year. The youngsters, having to shoulder extra reponsibility given the current injury issues are showing great signs. Rhett Kelly played far and away his best game in senior footy, Mark Coghlan's performances improve every week, Tom Marriot and Jake Mackie got plenty of exposure to quality opponents and got their fair share of the football.
With a tough training phase commencing during the week off and some players due to come back, rest assured, it will be a different Leongatha outfit that meets Traralgon in two weeks time.
It was almost audible to hear the screech and then the thud along Roughead St on Saturday in the second half of the senior game as the early season form of the parrots ground to a halt and came back down to earth.
With what some would say, having close to their entire first choice of midfielders out; Foulds, H. Browne, Mullins, McLennan and Delphine may have made a difference to the scoreline, but it probably wouldn't have been enough to change the result. Drouin sustained the same intensity for four quarters and rotated fresh players into important positions on the ground to stretch Leongatha beyond their means in the latter half of the game to run all over the top of them by 57 points. Perfect examples of this were leaders Brad Rayson and Tom Dowd, who were their usual damaging self in the first half, but just unable to give enough to stop the bleeding in the second.
When Paul Lepage was unable to come out in the second half after a corked knee seized up, players had to be thrown around the usually settled back six and just didn't adapt adequately and as consequence leaked goals from everywhere late in the game.
Justin Sutherland maintained his great early season form in the ruck, Paul Fawcett showed his value to the side by toilling manfully on the ball, Mark Truscio had a consistent four quarters of football which would have pleased coaching staff and Dwayne Holt stayed on top of the goalkicking list with another five goals.

Windy, drizzly conditions at Garfield weren't enough to deny Leongatha's football and netball teams a clean sheet of victories on Saturday as all sides currently hold a position in the top five, a great start.
The main game saw the club's biggest scare with the Parrots coming away with a nervous 10 point victory. Although Leongatha led for the majority of the match, Garfield were never far away and showed that no team in the competition can afford to take them lightly, especially on their home ground. The stars play their deck very well and they showed our senior team that they have plenty of room for improvement if they want to keep the top spot on the ladder they currently reside in.
It was a case of the bookends on the field saving the guys bacon on Saturday. With Paul Lepage outstanding at full back and full forward Dwayne Holt proving a hand full every time the ball is in his area. A settled back six is a coaches dream and Leongatha are very lucky to have this at the moment. The genuine blue collar performers in Govers, Rump, Hughes, Fawcett and Lepage; mixed with the flair of Poulton has proven throughout the first four matches, they are the equal any line in the competition.
A big week is in store at the club this week with our elite performance evening on Wednesday, preceded by an agility master class from some of the country's foremost athletes and coaches. Saturday sees us come up against Drouin which will be an acid test for all football and netball teams alike, which will be followed by the cabaret night at Memorial Hall, the biggest night on the football club's social calendar.
A huge crowd, most reliving past parrot glory from the 99, 89 and 79 football and netball premierships watched an extremely entertaining game of country football on Saturday night in a classic arm wrestle that was fitting of a finals size attendance and contest. There was nothing in the match right until the final few minutes when Adrian Campbell's chargers pulled away from a galant and determined Morwell outfit to come out victors by 28 points.
It definitely wasn't all smooth sailing for Leongatha, especially when the tigers goaled late in the third term to put them over two goals in front and controlling the middle through a commanding performance by Adam Bailey.
The final term showed how much the boys wanted the victory with the backline holding strong and the forward line at their potent best. It was all too much for Morwell in the end and Leongatha ran away with a hard fought victory with first gamer Tom Marriot showing the way with some fierce defensive pressure all match.

A great day for the Leongatha football club saw them make the trek to Sale and come home with 3 out of 4 wins for the day in gale-force yet dry conditions.
Congratulations have to go to the thirds and seconds sides to make the longest road trip in our competition on a Sunday and come away with two fantastic wins. It really shows the spirit within the club to help one another. To create a selfless culture through all grades is our goal and these guys are showing this in spadefuls. Great work guys.
The guys were pumped up for Adam Govers 100th game and endeavoured to attack the game with the same comittment that he shows every week and it was evident straight away. Outscoring Sale into the breeze in the first quarter set up the win and cohesiveness of the backline was the foundation of a solid effort. Pressure wins games in conditions such as what was thrown up on Sunday and with a record tackle count there was little easy avenues to goal for the magpies all day.
A trademark performace from Govers himself was the highlight of the invidual performances. Brad Rayson, Justin Sutherland, Jesse Poulton, Paul Fawcett and Hayden Browne were also meeting and exceeding their high standards. A big night has been organised this Saturday night against Morwell with netball and football reunions being held. Expect to see a big crowd and a tight, competitive contest.
Slightly greasy conditions and a large expectant crowd met our football and netball teams for the first round of the season. All in all it was a great evening for the club with four netball and two football teams coming away with emphatic wins.
The main event of the evening saw last year's preliminary finalists Warragul roll-out a very competitive unit against the Parrot's senior line up with six debutants in for the clash. Four of which took centre stage at one time or another and played an important part in creating the side's best start to a season in years and coming home with a 78 point victory.
The first half was an extremely even affair with the pace of the game drawing comments around the crowd of when it was going to let up. The highlight of the first two quarters was a trademark goal from Warragul & Vic Country on-baller Ryan Davey after a 50m dash and long left foot. Not to be outdone was first game full forward Dwayne Holt who displayed great ferocity to win the contested ball and snap a 40m goal on his non-preferred side. After trailling by a goal at quarter time, Leongatha kicked ahead in red time in the second to be 14 points up at half time.
The team that settles into the game on their terms first usually come away with the victory in early rounds and that was Leongatha in the third. Even though Warragul's competitveness around the ball was equal to their opponents, their entries into 50 were being repelled by a frugal Parrot defence, led by Paul Le Page and first gamer Jesse Poulton who's dash and decision making seemed to be the perfect fit into a settled back six. At the other end of the ground, Leongatha looked dangerous every time they went forward of the centre. The game broke open in the last quarter with the Parrot midfield being given an arm chair ride by Justin Sutherland who's ruck work to debutant Travis Brown running into an open goal sealed the victory mid-way through the last quarter. Brown's display around goals on Saturday night showed his pedigree and experience in high standard leagues around Victoria.
