The 2s travelled out to Glen Eira in the hope of making it two on the trot and beginning an extended march to next season's finals series. After being named captain in the absence of every single member of the leadership group, Zuccs had one job to do. It’s fair to say he didn’t do it, as we began the first quarter kicking into a wind not seen since Cyclone Yasi devastated the banana industry.
Despite Jabba working hard as our sole forward focus, we struggled to convert much of the play in the opening ten minutes into scoreboard pressure. When the Saints kicked their first at around this point, it opened the flood gates and they piled on 8 more before the siren blew. Hoju was our only saviour, swaying around several would-be tacklers before kicking our only major of the term.
Unfortunately the second quarter was not much better for the Bloods as the opposition piled on four goals against the wind to our solitary point. Hooters and Jellie were shining lights in their first half of footy for the year, regularly attacking the footy with much gusto. A terrifically inspiring half time speech from Shozza was just what the doctor ordered and we came out of the main break with more motivation than would seem appropriate for a team trailing by 77 points.
The second half was a much more even affair as the Bloods were able to stop the Saints' rampant goal scoring. The game became a lot more congested as we worked effectively to reduce the impact the opposition’s runners were having.
Woody’s voice and impact around the contests was outstanding and would seem to justify his interesting preparation for the match. The trusty backline duo of Gibba and Zuccs was able to minimise the damage of the Glen Eira forward entries and with the help of the rest of the backline helped to keep the scoreline respectable. Special mention must also go to Sam Porter who worked hard all day in the ruck and resorted to injuring his opponents in an attempt to gain the upper hand.
