Same Game Same Disappointment
The Bloods traveled to Deakin Uni to take on the Animals in what was built as a game of redemption for Aquinas after being on the end of a smashing the week before. Again 7 changes were made at the selection table with the match committee determined to pick 22 players who will give an honest crack. The game started in usual fashion, with the Bloods getting plenty of ball in the forward line and not being able to capitalise, whereas Emmaus seemed to be a lot more efficient with the pill and put the score on the board and went into the first change 3 goals up.
The second quarter was similar, with Aaron Kinghorn giving first use of the footy but the Bloods midfield just kept turning it over with basic skill errors. Lachy Barnes and Cal Cormack were looking dangerous up forward and skipper Morrison-Story was recapturing his great form from early in the year. The main issue for the Bloods was their lack of accountability when they didn’t have the footy. The last 10 minutes of the first half was pleasing for the coaching staff, as Aquinas started to control the tempo and hit up on the scoreboard.
Having a rev up at half time, and reminded of the simple things that will get them back in the game, Aquinas tried hard to lift the tempo, only to run into a determined Emmaus side who took control in the middle and gave their forwards first use. If it wasn’t for the great work of Gommers and McPherson, things could have got worse. Determined not to give up, the Bloods got themselves back in the game thanks to goals by first gamer Tim Manley and Cal Cormack. The bloods went into the last change still with a sniff.
Once again it was a case of close but not good enough for the Bloods, who were gallant in defeat and walk away from the game very disappointed that they couldn’t get the much needed four points. Our focus now turns our round 16 clash against Eltham. To say this game is big would be an understatement. I urge all Supported to get down to Aquinas College this week to cheer the boys on and help them get over the line this week.
