The Penrith Rams returned to the winners list on Sunday, defeating Pennant Hills by 45 points at Greygums Oval. After heavy losses at their past two starts, Penrith needed to find some form in a hurry in order to keep a hold on a finals berth, however, they were would need to do so without the agency of a number of the side’s prime movers. Despite this though, the Rams were able to get on top early, and after heading into the final change with a four goal margin, finished off strongly to record a morale boosting win.
The big men in James Yates and the returning Mark Woodford were dominant, with on-ballers Liam Murphy and Harley Stibbard also stepping up to the plate. Jake Pianta made the most of his move forward to provide a target to kick four goals, whilst the debuts of three U/18’s players in Luke Woodworth, Pat Pope and Brad Camilleri was especially pleasing.
Earlier in the day, the U/18’s put in one of their best performances of the season, despite going down to the fourth placed Demons by 64 points. The aforementioned Woodworth, Pope and Camilleri were amongst the better players, along with Josh Zolfel and Harry Doyle. Ben Falchi also put in his best game of the year.
The Under 18s in the process of their performance broke a long-standing club record, being the most goals kicked in a Rams final score without scoring a behind. The previous record was 5.0 (30), which was achieved on no less than five occasions - the first time in 1994 and the most recent occasion being this season, by the Penrith Ramettes. Well done boys, you didn't only break the record, you smashed it!
On Saturday, the reserves travelled to take on the top side in UTS with a strong line-up, and they were able to come away with an excellent five goal win to leave the Rams clear in third spot. Bryce Roney and Max McNamara lead the backline with aplomb, whilst Blake Roberts provided a marking target to kick four goals. Matt Cummins, Mitch Reinhard, Scott Randall and Lachlan Geeves also did well.
Division Five also hit the road to take on the top of the ladder side in Sydney Uni. Despite going down by 87 points, the boys showed their continued improvement from the early part of the season. David Pettit, Luke Donoghue and Daniel Barnes were Penrith’s best.
The Ramettes came ever so close to a history making first win, falling short by 14 points to the UTS Shamrocks. The girls lead by a goal at quarter time, but the Shamrocks slowly got on top to take the spoils. Kate Easthope was best for the Ramettes with two goals, with Nat Camilleri and Stephanie Kostic also playing strongly. Kayla Badger also bobbed up to boot two goals.
This week sees the seniors in another crucial match-up against UNSW/ES on Saturday at Greygums Oval, with the reserves and U/18’s also facing the Bulldogs. Division Five travel to take on Moorebank, whilst the Ramettes will be hoping to notch that elusive first victory when they tackle Auburn at Mahoney Park.
The club would like to acknowledge the continued support in 2012 of our wonderful sponsors, IGA Signature, Ice Break Ice Coffee, the Red Cow Inn, Freestyle Barber Shop and Mr Taxman.
