If the embarrassing scoreline wasn't enough at the ground, a local newspaper headline this week would surely have reinforced it for the players when aptly describing the smashing of the Pumas at the hands of the Western Magpies. While the Pumas maybe hapless and languishing on the bottom of the premiership table, the squad is certainly not hopeless. There have been consistent efforts from some players, and a spirit most evident at the Coolie game that indicated what they could do when they felt they had a sniff of a winning chance. While there is no substitute for size and speed, and their efforts are commendable, under pressure many players thus far haven't shown the composure and skills to hold possession and convert points. Head Coach Milbourne would surely be playing the style of football that lends itself to the strengths of the squad. Doing it for four quarters of football has been the challenge.
This week it's Round 7 of the PHC against Aspley at their Graham Road ground. Big things were expected of the Hornets this season and after firing out of the blocks with wins in the first 2 rounds, now find themselves in 8th position on the ladder after losses in their last 4 games. A win against the Pumas is desperately needed to get their season back on track and for a slim chance of making the final five. Colvin, Evans and Nuss will again need to give them the impetus required if they are to win.
The Pumas have experimented with several line-ups, some forced by injuries, and with some younger players in and out of the weekly list. However, it's made little difference to the scorelines, which may lead the selection panel to persist with them in the hope that an improving younger side with meet with success towards mid-season. But whatever the list this week, a win will require contributions by all players for four quarters.
Reserves 12.00 pm and Seniors 2.00 pm at Aspley.
