After being all-square at the first break in their match against 7th-placed Burleigh, the Pumas kicked 4.6 in the second term to be in control of the match. The Reserves meet 2nd-placed Wilston Grange next week then are at home against cellar-dwellers, Mayne, on Saturday 1 August.
Coach Simon Rowe's account of their great win against the Bombers.
After two close contests against two of the top teams and a narrow loss last game, the boys were just starting to play some real good team football and a win was just around the corner.
First quarter saw the Pumas get on the board with an early goal to Adrian “Bear” Wallin. This seemed to get the players up and running and they put another goal through. Burleigh hit back with a couple of their own and were back in the game at quarter time with the score line being 3 goals 2 apiece.
Second quarter was one of the best of the season with young Adam Symons dominating out of the back pocket. Sean Howse and the McEwan twins were getting plenty of the ball and with big Bear at full forward, the Pumas were looking far better than their opponents kicking 4 goals 6 while Burleigh could only manage 1 goal 1 behind.
At half time, Coach Simon Rowe, told his charges that the game was far from over and that Burleigh would come out hard in the third quarter and that the young Puma side would have to take whatever the opposition dished up. He asked them to keep their minds on the job and play the way they had been training. Burleigh certainly came out firing and were able to peg the score line back kicking 3 goals while the pumas could only manage 2 of their own.
With the team in front at three-quarter time for the first time all year, a win was only 20 minutes away! The last quarter was a real battle but with Simon Hamilton and Adam Symons repelling the ball out of the back line on numerous occasions, the whole team started to lift and with the thought of victory on their minds the Pumas were full of run and out-scored Burleigh in the last to claim their first win of the season.
Great four quarter effort boys but let's not leave it there with only 4 games remaining; let’s keep working at it and try to finish off with a couple more wins!
