Andrew Housego – a true champion
In winning his 4th Best and Fairest Club Champion award, Andrew Housego has joined another legend on 4 wins, Carl Herbert. Andrew has always represented Mayne Tigers to the best of his ability and this year he was a leader in all senses. He has played 194 games for the Tigers and we look forward to being there in 2010 on his 200th game day and having a big win to celebrate. Well done Andrew.
New trophies for 2009 onwards
The Russell Ditchburn Perpetual Trophy for Under 18 Best and Fairest trophy has been awarded for the first time but will be back dated for the three years that the Under 18s have been playing. Russell was instrumental in getting the Under 18s off the ground – first as the Central District Cougars and then when Kedron pulled out of the Cougars, he went on and made sure that Mayne Tigers had a team in their own right. The Committee decided that any perpetual trophy for Best and Fairest in this grade should be named after the person who has put heart and soul into Mayne Tigers for the past 20 years. And that is after he stopped playing!!
The Committee also agreed to the proposal that there should be some trophies for helpers and they agreed to the 4 new ones (first time winners above), Match Day Helper, Team Support Person, Best Coach and Committee Person of the Year. We feel that this is a better way to thank people for the effort that they put in over the year.
All those nominated in any category were given a Certificate of Appreciation and a bottle of wine, donated by Low Hill Enterprises.
Thanks for the help
Thanks to all who came along and helped make the Trophy Night so successful:
Donation to St Vincent Home for Homeless Men
There was plenty of Tiger Spirit at Trophy Night but few Tiger appetites. So to make best use of all the left over food it was donated to St Vincent’s Home for Homeless Men at Peel Street. The chook, salad and ham was well received by the home and put to immediate use for the Sunday night meal.
AFLQ Todd Duncanson Medal voting – Mayne Tigers
The Mayne Tigers did not fare as well as usual at the Todd Duncanson medal night. Andrew Housego again led the way with 8 votes, followed by Baden Crathern – 5, Caleb Brown and Aaron Whitecross – 4, Corey Massingham and Jake McGill (from Western Magpies on permit) – 3, Jimmy Gillett – 2 and Luke Ferguson – 1.
If there was a Fairest Club trophy then Mayne would have been in the running with only one report in A Grade and 2 or 3 in Reserves. The striking charge in A Grade was for that noted “Wildman” Keane White and he was rubbed out for one match.
And mild mannered Daryl Whitecross was one of the ones to go in Reserves for abusing the umpire – it is a pity that there are no mitigating circumstances allowed as we all thought that the umpire wasn’t too hot either Dasher.
MAYNE TIGERS AFC – TROPHY NIGHT - PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Dick Fell
After an Annual General Meeting where there were vacancies for President and Vice-President and some other key positions it was with some misgivings that I nominated for and was accepted into the position of President. On reflection it has been a good year for Mayne Tigers and one which augurs well for the future.
The Mayne Tigers suffered a disappointing loss to a switched on Surfers Paradise down the coast. The conditions were set for a good game of football and even with a couple of late replacements there was an expectation of a close game. This was true of the first quarters where Surfers couldn’t get away playing with the wind. And Mayne managed to score against the stiff breeze.
But in the second tern it was a different story as Mayne struggled to score their 2 goals with the wind and Surfers managed to easily score 6 against it. Three of these goals came in a disastrous last 5 minutes where the defence went missing and the more seasoned players made mistakes that cost goals.
Another well rounded display from Surfers in the 3rd quarter and the game was well beyond redemption going into the final term. Mayne made a spirited fight back to try and restore respectability to the scoreboard but were let down in front of goal and scored only 3 – 7 for the term for a great deal of possession in the forward 50m.
Score Mayne Tigers 9-8- 62 to Surfers Paradise 21 – 17 - 143
Best players:
Caleb Brown who was outstanding for most of the day with a glut of possession across the half back line
Luke Ferguson – a lone hand up front and kicked 5 goals before being moved to bolster other areas
Aaron Whitecross in a return to something near his best had a top game full of effort and good disposal
Hugh Valentine – given a task and stuck to it manfully all day
Jimmy Gillette – as usual ran himself into the ground
Jake Magill – another good game providing good ball into the forward line for the most part
This was the most disappointing loss that the Reserves have had this year not for the lack of effort as much as both the inability and unwillingness to get their hands on the ball first. Also there was a decided lack of enthusiasm in chasing and this was the first time this year that this has been the case.
However this was not true for all the team and there was a great effort on the ball from Trent Ingram – it is a pity that Trent can’t play all the games. The Tigers were also well served by Tom Ditchburn and Joe Hickey at the stoppages and around the ground. Christian Rollman was efficient at fullback while as usual marking a player about 30 cm taller than himself and there were good efforts from Brad Twartz and Darryl Whitecross at the back and from Sam Ditchburn when shifted to a defenders role (Although Dasher fell foul of the law and spent time in the sin bin, as did Joe).
Whatever Dasher said to the umpire to be sent off was much less than what the coaching and Mayne spectators were saying – the umpire was being particularly severe on the Tigers at that part of the game.
