Match Report by Ben Carbonaro
The Werribee Tigers kept their finals double chance with a convincing 82-point demolition of Collingwood at Victoria Park on Saturday.
Tigers coach Scott West was pleased with his team after an indifferent start.
“I thought it was alright early and we probably were just doing enough, but I think we competed well. If you compete well enough and hard enough, you end up breaking the opposition down and that’s what I think happened.”
Shutting down teams after half time has been issue for the Tigers in some games this year, but West was impressed with his team’s second half performance.
“Sometimes you’ve just got to be ruthless, not just with the opposition but with your teammates. That’s part of a really good team. I think we played a lot better in the second half.”
After a scrappy opening from both sides, the Tigers took advantage of slick ball delivery and movement later in the quarter to kick four goals to Collingwood’s two and lead by 11 points at quarter time.
Werribee played the better brand of football and their continual pressure in defence caused Collingwood to make several costly turnovers. Strong run and carry was also a feature of Werribee’s second quarter performance. They led by 28 point half time.
Werribee set up the win with a dominant third quarter piling on eight goals to one. Livewire North Melbourne listed small forward Ben Warren was the catalyst kicking four goals to help his team to a commanding 71 point lead at the final break.
The Tigers continued to power ahead with a further three goals.
Warren kicked five goals for the Tigers, while Levi Greenwood’s pace and silky midfield skills saw him named best on ground.
The Tigers now face the Casey Scorpions in a qualifying final at Casey Fields on Sunday afternoon.
