Match Report by Nick Duxson.
Werribee secured a hard fought eight point win over Collingwood at Avalon Airport Oval tonight in front of a very good crowd.
Majak Daw returned from Tasmania mid-afternoon( he was the stand by Kangaroo player) and had a big presence early, taking three marks inside fifty and kicking the Tigers first goal in the 16th minute. Skipper Robbie Castello was showing no sign of his troublesome toe injury as he opened his account from 40 metres out in the first quarter.
The Pies adopted a similar tactic to the Blues last week, attempting to shut down Werribee’s run and carry off half back, a late goal to the Pies giving them the lead right on the quarter time siren.
Daniel Currie shrugged off his hand injury from last week, dominating in the ruck, while key Pies midfielder Kyle Martin was shut down by Levi Greenwood.
Mason Wood kicked two goals in a minute after half time, while Majak was denied soon after by some superb Collingwood ‘goalkeeping’ on the line.A raking left-footed bomb from Sierakowski minutes later extended the home side’s lead, their quick movement by hand and foot catching the Pies’ defenders out of position.
Clearance king Jarred Moore racked up nine clearances before half time and Ayden Kennedy was instrumental in setting up play from the back half. The Tigers nine-point lead was extended soon after the break as tall forward Scott Clouston snapped truly across his body, but ex-Frankston midfielder Kyle Martin responded for the visitors soon after, cutting the margin to four points at the final change.
Scott West’s boys came out inspired after the break – Ben Warren running hard from half back and into an open goal 20 metres outs in the opening minute.
West said, “It was pretty much the same as what I told them all game.We knew they were going to come again, we knew the game was there to be won. We had to take our chances and move the ball the way we wanted to.”
The message clearly got through, as Addam Maric snapped soon after, Warren snagged another, and then set up influential ruckman Currie to extend the Tigers lead beyond four goals.Late goals to Collingwood’s Alan Didak and Marley Williams reduced the margin, but by then the result was a foregone conclusion – Jake Wilson again magnificent down back for the home side.
Tigers coach Scott West said “It was a really good response from last week.We were a lot cleaner with the ball this week. It’s pleasing to see we were able touse the footy and give our forwards opportunity. We probably didn’t get reward for effort, I thought we really dominated early but didn’t take our chances. They stayed in the game and it was close in the end”.
