Thursday night on the Gold Coast Luke McDonald will become the first former Werribee player to be selected in the top ten of the national draft. Luke has a unique connection to the VFL Tigers being the son of the club’s only premiership captain coach- Donald McDonald. Werribee has had great success in recent years having players drafted into the AFL system.
Other Werribee players who have been drafted include the first ever in Darren Enever (Geelong) ,Dallas Normington (Fitzroy), Jason Watts (Footscray), Shaun Smith (Melbourne),Robert Di Rosa (Essendon), Nathan Saunders (Western Bulldogs), the Gowans twins (St. Kilda), Ben Hudson (Adelaide), James Condos(Western Bulldogs) and the latest batch Dale Morris (Western Bulldogs), Michael Barlow(Fremantle), Brad Mangan(North Melbourne) and last year Kyle Hartigan (Adelaide). Hartigan was recently upgraded from the Crows rookie list. We also claim James Podsiadly even though he was officially drafted as a Geelong VFL player.
This Thursday night might see another name or two added to that list. Ben Brown the first year player from Tasmania has certainly attracted a lot of attention as has Scott Sherlock, Jake Wilson, Scott Clouston and Darcy Fort.
Brown went to the national combine while Sherlock, Wilson and Fort were invited to the state combine.
We wish all the players the best, whatever their future holds.
