MATCH DAY REPORT - WERRIBEE VERSUS CASEY SCORPIONS
BY JAIMES WIGGINS
In what can only be described as a wonderful experiment - the Werribee Tigers took a home game from Chirnside Park to their regional recruiting area of Warrnambool and outclassed a very much improved Casey Scorpions by 8 points to win the "Warehouse Sales - VFL Cup Challenge" watched by a crowd in excess of 1,500 people.
After a disappointing result against Geelong and Casey's impressive 5 goal win over a "Collingwood" dominated Williamstown team - this game was seen as a make or break game for the Tigers.
The Tigers were quick out of the blocks kicking 3 goals before the Scorpions opened their account. Reid Oval seemed to suit the style of play coach Simon Atkins asked for. At quarter-time Werribee led Casey by 14 points. In the 2nd quarter after a rev-up from Coach Peter Banfield, the Scorpions came out firing going into the half-time break with the smallest of leads being one point.
In a highly entertaining 3rd quarter both sides went goal for goal with 13 goals being spread amongst the two teams and the locals who came out in droves were excited by the quick running style of VFL football on display.
In a tight last quarter the Werribee boys hung on to defeat a gallant Casey team with an outstanding performance by the 21st birthday boy - Jarrod Young who continues to improve every game he plays. Young had the job of shadowing former Western Bulldogs / Melbourne and now St. Kilda veteran on-baller Stephen Powell and did an outstanding job also kicking 2 goals in the process.
Vice-Captain James Podsiadly continued his fine season leading from the front with 5 goals, whilst former Tassie Mariner and Geelong recruit Jarrod Garth chipped in with 3 goals. Other excellent performances came from small dynamo Salim Hassan who worked tirelessly through the mid-field and half-forward unfortunately missing out taking a mark that was described by the locals as "There goes a Car" in reference as an outstanding possibility to win the Footy Show's - Almost Football Legends section. Kieran McGuiness who came back from the Western Bulldogs provided plenty of drive out of the backline, utility Jordan Barham at both ends of the ground, Mid-fielder Sam Power and ruckman Cameron Purss were among the best players.
This weekend sees the Tigers take on top side Northern Bullants at Cramer Street which should be another exciting game starting at 2pm with the Reserves kicking off at 12pm.
