Match Report Daniel Paproth
IT WAS gritty and tough, but Werribee managed to snatch its sixth win of the year, leaving them even on the win-loss ledger, after edging out Sandringham in a hard-fought match at Bartercard Oval.
A sizeable crowd turned up for what promised to be an interesting encounter, with the Tigers coming off a barnstorming second half the week prior to against Tasmania.
The Tigers came out firing in the first quarter, kicking five goals and restricting their opposition to just a few points – the second time it has happened in three weeks. They were quick out of the middle and the forwards were presenting well.
James Saker, who spent most of the day on Nick Sautner, was impressive, and it took a long time for Sautner to get into the game.
With Sautner down on his usual productivity, Melbourne’s Michael Newton became Sandringham’s main target. He kicked 2.3 for the afternoon.
Sandringham were right back into the game in the secopnd quarter kicking six goals to two , mostly thanks to Adam Yze who had thirteen second term touches.
The Werribee players copped a spray at half-time from coach Simon Atkins, as the game had striking similarities with the Box Hill match, but the Tigers were desperate for the win and fought hard in the second half.
Again poor kicking for goal stopped the Tigers from going further ahead, kicking 2.6 to 3.2 for the third term. But it was there to see that they wanted the victory, and with Ben Davies running hot (37 disposals) and backed up by the likes of Dom Gleeson and Scott Thompson they were able to carry some momentum into the final quarter.
The last term was a classic, see-sawing affair, but Werribee were able to hold a handy 13-point buffer for most of the quarter. Leigh Brown had a strong final term, kicking two crucial goals that gave them some breathing space, but the Zebras weren’t going away. However a late goal to Scott McMahon courtesy of a free kick and a 50-metre penalty proved costly for Sandringham, and Werribee held on for a memorable six-point win, their first over Sandringham in recent years.
The Tigers play Geelong, Frankston and Casey all at home over the coming few weeks. The win sees the Tigers in seventh position.
