Werribee v Casey Scorpions Match report by Daniel Paproth
MOMENTUM is a big factor in football and after beating Casey Scorpions, Werribee have got it in bucket loads
The inclusion of Nathan Thompson was a bonus for the Tigers and the game was won in an amazing first quarter in which Werribee kicked nine goals to three, their best quarter of the year.
Podsiadly and Thompson, who kicked ten goals between them, were firing up forward and there were many other contributors all over the ground.
Werribee is an exciting place with the Tigers running into a rich vein of form at the perfect time.. Casey mounted small challenges but were simply too far behind after Werribee’s brilliant first term.
The Scorpions launched numerous attacks, but were thwarted by inaccuracy and a sublime performance from the likes of Scott Howard and Scott Thompson. Howard in particular was good, taking a few marks on the last line of defence and rebounding Casey’s entries.
It was a shared effort for Werribee, with Dom Gleeson’s 26 possessions the best for the Tigers.
Leigh Brown was used in the ruck by coach Simon Atkins to good effect. He had 11 hit outs and seven clearances which would have caught the eye of North Melbourne coach Dean Laidley who was at the ground.
One of the reasons the Tigers are becoming a tough opponent is their fierce pressure. They had an extraordinary 80 tackles for the match, which must be close to some sort of record. Gleeson laid nine, Jess Sinclair eight and Matt Riggio seven.
The Tigers now have nine wins for the year, and have a week off before heading to TEAC oval to play Port Melbourne. Their run home afyer that is Bendigo, Collingwood and Box Hill, before a tantalising final-round clash against Williamstown.
They proved today that their best can match it with the cream of the competition.
