Championship Season

Darwin Airport Resort League Results from Tuesday 13 November 2012

League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

Tracy Village downed the Uni Rebels 77-54 to keep this season’s championship trophy squarely in their sights. The Jets haven’t won the Championship Grand Final since 2003 and a win would give them the double for the year as they also won the Challenge Season championship. The Bombers (43% from the field) didn’t waste any time setting the tempo for the game as they flew out to a 20-7 first quarter lead behind the shooting of Briana Grazioli and Sam Rioli. The Rebels put in a charge in the second quarter outscoring the Bombers 23-19, but that was the last hurrah for them as they capitulated in the second half while the Bombers went on a tear, scoring 38 points to 24. Bomber Tara Maxwell hit a team high 15, Kylie Duggan had a double, 13pts and a whopping 16 boards plus 8 assists, Rioli had 12 and Grazioli 11. Tamara Sheppard led the Rebels with 16 with Jaylene Bonson adding 13.

Lightning v Eagles

Lightning ground out a 67-56 win against the Eagles in a match they could not afford to lose. With Ansett bearing down on them for a shot (although it is a long shot) at the double chance of second place Lightning had to pull out all the stops in the end game to come away winners. The Eagles had opened up the game with a 13-11 run in the first quarter which Lightning quickly erased in the second to take a 26-23 half time lead. Only a few points separated the two sides in the third quarter with Lighting taking a 43-39 lead heading into the last frame. Lightning came alive in the last quarter with Brittney Ward hitting 7 of her 18 points while Tahnee Lew Fatt and Sarah Carbone nailed timely three pointers mid-way through the quarter during a 24-17 run that ended any hope the Eagles may have had. Jacinda Lambert did all the hard yards for Lightning early in the game, finishing with a game high 21. Michelle Friel hit a team high 19 for the Eagles with Leonie Snowdon chipping in with 12 and Lillian Williams 11. Lightning take on the Jets next week in what could be a preview of the Grand Final in a few weeks.

Ansett v Palmerston

Ansett rolled over Palmerston 67-35 to stay in touch with Lightning, who they have a chance to overhaul for second place depending on results of the last round. Sam Drescher and Nichole Silmon did a number on Palmerston, scoring 29 points each during the win. The Blues led 31-22 at the half time break. The floodgate’s opened in the second half as the Blues hit 36 points to just 13 for Palmerston. Jill Pytko was best for Palmerston with 8.

Ladder:                                  Tracy Village Jets 18-1, Lightning 13-6, Ansett 12-7, Eagles 8-11, Uni Rebels 5-14, & Palmerston 1-18

Next Week Round 20:       Eagles v Palmerston 6:15pm, Tracy Village Jets v Lightning 7:45pm & Ansett v Uni Rebels 9:15pm

League Men –Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

Lightning took another step forward towards maybe their first ever minor premiership by knocking off the Tracy Village Jets 94-82. A sterling effort from Jesse Bell and Zac White ensured Lightning of a chance for a bit of history. Bell hit a season high 34 points and grabbed 13 boards while White had 28 and 10. Lightning also hit 50% from the field to the Bombers 46, both pretty impressive stats, but the one stat that stood out was rebounds where Lightning were in control, gaining 40 to just 25 for the Jets. Lightning got the jump on the Bombers early with a 30-19 first quarter lead as Bell and White lit up the scoreboard with a combined 22pts (including 4 treys). The Bombers stormed back in the second term with a 28-24 run, but the damage was done in the first and Lighting maintained that edge throughout the game. Travis Ellis hit a team high 24 (plus 10 boards) for the Bombers with Alex Weetra dropping in 24. The stage is set for a frantic last round which will decide who the final four are and what position’s they will be in.

Palmerston v Ansett

Ansett slipped past Palmerston 73-59 to keep their hopes alive of a minor premiership. The most recent chance for the Blues was 1998 when they just lost out to the Eagles on % for the minor premiership. This season they have a small advantage over Lightning and their game next week against the Jets looms as a must win if they are to have any chance. Ansett’s main threat, Daniel Florance, was again in good form, leading a group of four players in double figures during the win. Florance finished with 17, Matt Barrett 16, Matt Hunt 14 and John King 11. The Blues took a 19-14 lead after one quarter and never looked back, holding the advantage throughout the encounter. Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson led a scrappy Palmerston with 16 with Aaron Simpson picking up 12 and Tom Hemsley 11.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

The defending champion Uni Rebels (who have won the last three Championship Season Grand Finals) are into the final four after easily knocking off the fourth placed Eagles 87-62. The win gives the Rebels a 2-1 match winning record against the Eagles for the season, putting them into the final four no matter what the outcome of next week’s game against Ansett. Guard Jarrod Sheppard was on fire from outside the arc, hitting 7 treys during a 33 point outburst reminiscent of his usual game of a couple of years ago. Justin Eckhardt added to Eagle woes with a big 27 point effort and Lachlan Headlam put up 13. A 23-13 first quarter was just the beginning of defeat for the Eagles as the Rebels charged away during the mid-game to lead by a game winning 30 points, 71-41, at the beginning of the last quarter. Buster Perkins led the Eagles with 28, Shonsdale Robinson had 15 (well below his league leading 27.6ppg) and Joseph Johnson had 10 (below his 17ppg). Defense was the name of the game for the Rebels and will have to be next week to get by Lightning if they want to defend their title.

Ladder:                                   Ansett & Lightning 13-4, Tracy Village Jets 11-6, Eagles 9-9, Uni Rebels 9-8, Palmerston 4-13 & Razzle 1-15

Next Week Round 21:           Tracy Village Jets v Ansett 6:15pm, Lightning v Uni Rebels 7:45pm & Palmerston v Razzle 9:15pm, bye: Eagles
