Women

Razzle on the back of a 62-48 win have taken over third spot from Ansett who have now slipped to fourth. Razzle are now within one game of the top spot and appear to be back on track. Razzle played well as a team with every player scoring at least two points. Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe again led the scoring for Razzle with 14 while Annabelle Harbison produced one of her best games this season and finished with 13 points. For Ansett Samantha Drescher was again kept relatively quiet and finished with only 15 while Stacey McKenzie playing her first league game this season finished with 14. Both teams face big games next week with Razzle up against Lightning and Ansett up against the Uni Rebels.

Lightning have held off a fourth quarter challenge from the Eagles who levelled the scores with only two minutes to go before going on to win 65-53. New Lightning recruit Megan Sinclair contributed strongly in her first game in Darwin with 20 points and received solid support from Tamara Sheppard who finished with 16 points (13 points in the first quarter). Claire Humphrey was also instrumental down the stretch scoring 8 of her 10 points late in the game. For the Eagles both Megan Reeve (22 points) and Katherine Hollis (17 points) played outstanding games and kept the undermanned Eagles in the contest all night. Lightning who have won five straight games will face a resurgent Razzle team next week while the Eagles will battle the TV Jets.

The TV Jets women have ended their drought with their first win of the season, a 58-45 victory over the Warriors. New TV Jets recruit Jess Eason was tough on both ends of the floor and was nearly unstoppable on the boards with in excess of 20 rebounds and 12 points. Tikesha Docherty-Cole led all scorers with 16 points. Even though the Jets have a tough task to make the finals currently sitting at 1-9, on last night’s performance they will no doubt be a tough opponent for all teams for the rest of the season. The Warriors brightest spot last night was again Tara Carroll who scored 15 points.

Men

Lightning ran out big winners over the Eagles 104-71. Lightning won every quarter and it was clear that the Eagles desperately missed the presence of Timmy Duggan. Lightning’s Tom Leonard led all scorers with 24 points while big man Karsten Oltrop had a personal season high with 22.While the Eagles had five players finish in double digits the telling tale was the Eagles inability to stop Lightning from scoring. The Eagles will now need to regroup as they face a critical game against the TV Jets next week as they try and avoid slipping further away from the top four.

The TV Jets have revenged their early season loss to the Warriors by holding on from a strong second half challenge from the Warriors to win by two points 87-85. Travis Ellis led the way all night for the Jets and signalled he is back to his best with 33 points (including 13 of his teams 20 crucial points in the fourth). The Warriors who started
slowly were down by 15 at half-time before Bayi Handy opened up in the third quarter scoring 18 of his league round high 43 points. The Warriors had a chance to tie or win the game in the late seconds but couldn’t capitalise as the TV Jets defense held them out and forced them into a crucial error. The Warriors will have to wait two weeks before they can look to get back in the winners circle while the TV Jets will match up against the Eagles.

Ansett have crushed a struggling Razzle team 66-32. Razzle who once again were in the game after quarter time (down only 15-11) struggled badly from that point on, particularly on the offensive end. For Ansett Matthew Flannegan was on target scoring 18 points (including four threes) and received support from his entire team who all tested the scorers by scoring at least two points. The one positive for Razzle was the solid play from Jess Angus who finished the game with a team high 13. Things won’t get any easier for Razzle as they continue to look for their first win when they face an offensively hot Lightning team. Ansetts improved defense will be put to the test against the league leading Uni Rebels.

Uni Rebels 8-1
Tracy Village Jets 8-2

Ansett 4-6
Eagles 2-7
Razzle 0-9
