League WOMEN –Eagles v Tracy Villge Jets

The Eagles made it into the playoff picture with a 48-40 win against the third place Tracy Village Jets.  It was a ‘must win’ game for the Eagles who would have just missed out due to the win earlier in the evening by Ansett over the Lightning.  The Jets came home strong in the second half but couldn’t breech the gap the Eagles had built in the first quarter.  Katherine Hollis and her sister Greta Hollis-Stephensen (13 @ 13.6ppg) got off to great starts in the first quarter giving the Eagles a 15-8 lead that proved to be enough for the win, although they had to weather a Jet push in the last quarter.  Jade Keightley (14 @ 12.3ppg) and Keisha Tinley (12 @ 8.1ppg) put pressure on the Eagles through their scoring and defense in the last two quarters, but the birds got through it with Megan Reeve (11 @ 15.5ppg) , Christine Cooper and Brianna Grazioli (7ea) stepping up to the challenge.

League WOMEN

Ansett did what they had to do…beat the Lightning, but the 65-35 win was soured by the fact that the Eagles got up over the Tracy Village Jets to just edge the Blues out of a playoff position.  Samantha Drescher’s 34pt effort (22.2ppg) was huge in the win, but after being in a playoff position for the whole season until the last round is small consolation for winning the game.  After a close first quarter (13-11 Ansett) the Blues almost held the Lightning scoreless limiting them to just 1pt for the second quarter while on a 16pt run to lead at the half time break 29-12.  After the break Ansett just kept piling on the points despite the efforts of Chelsea Cook (14 @ 7.2ppg) and Suzie Crowe (7).  Lauren Flanegan also hit double figures for Ansett with 11.  Despite the loss Lightning are the minor premiers and now face Uni Rebels in the major semi-final next week.

Ladder:       Lightning 11-5, Uni Rebels 11-5, Tracy Village Jets 7-9, Eagles 6-10 and Ansett 5-11

Next week:  Semi Finals -             6:30pm –Uni Rebels v Lightning, 8pm – Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

League MEN – Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

The Uni Rebels took out the minor premiership with a 90-64 win over the disappointing Tracy   Village Jets who are out of the playoff picture for the first time in about 17yrs.  The Rebels looked like the team that has become the one to beat, as top scorers Ethan Kennedy (34 @ 28ppg) and Chris Baldwin (26 @ 20ppg) put up some big numbers again with support from Jamie Hamill (15 @ 2.8ppg) and Marcus Konanec Jr. (11).  A 24-9 first quarter run served notice to the Jets that there would be no mercy shown, but the Jets didn’t quite lay down as Travis Ellis (21 @ 26.8ppg) and Nick Pattrick (10 @ 10.6ppg) lit up the scoreboard to outscore the Rebels 23-20 in the second quarter as they tried to get back into contention.  Unfortunately for the Jets the Rebels kept on firing outscoring the Bombers 44-32 in the second half to grab the win.  The Rebels will now turn their thoughts to a major semi final against Ansett next week while the Jets go back to the drawing board. Danny Miller and Paul Pyne also hit double figures for the Jets with 12 & 10.

League MEN – Lightning v Eagles

Matthew Smith (23.5ppg) dropped in 27pts in just three quarters to lead the Eagles to a 90-78 win over the Lightning.  The Eagles held a narrow 17-14 lead after one quarter before both sides erupted offensively in the second with the Eagles getting the edge 28-25 to take a slim 45-39 half time lead.  Smith had 15pts at the half as did his counterpart for the Lighting, Evan Browne, who finished up the night with a game high 33.  The Eagles, however, had three others in double figures with Bobby Guyton (18 @ 22.8ppg), Jay Niven-Trewin (14 @ 3.6ppg) and Anthony Dennien (10) combining for 42 in support of Smith.   Cameron Bailey and Marcus Robinson had 14 each for Lightning.

League MEN –Warriors v Ansett

The Warriors got up over Ansett 86-78 with Bayi Handy (22.2ppg) and Brice Giles (22.1ppg) leading from the front with 23pts each.  The third quarter proved to be the turning point of the game as the Warriors made up a 4pt deficit at the half way mark to lead at the end of three quarters of play 56-52.  Giles played a major part in the come back hitting 12pts in the third quarter while the Warrior defense limited the Blues to only 13.  Colin Matteson (37 @ 27.2ppg), Matt (20 @ 14.6ppg) and Tom Hunt (11 @ 7.3ppg) led a fightback by Ansett in the last quarter but it fell just short, giving the Warriors the win and a bit of momentum going into the playoffs next week.

Ladder:        Uni Rebels 16-2, Ansett 15-3, Eagles 12-6, Warriors 9-9, Lightning 6-12, Tracy Village Jets 5-13 and Razzle 0-18.

Next week:  Semi-Finals - 6:30 – Eagles v Warriors, 8pm – Uni Rebels v Ansett
