Preliminary Final

League Women –Uni Rebels v Eagles

The minor premier Uni Rebels charged into another Challenge Season Grand Final with a 72-58 win over the Eagles. The Rebels had the services of Michelle Friel (15) who rushed back from Perth and Delsey Ah Wang (14) who was away on football representative duties last week and the pair didn’t let the team down. Justine Schmidt led all players with 18 points and Trish Graham added 16 as the Rebel offence got back on track after a lackluster showing in the semi final loss last week. This game proved to be the tight close encounter everyone expected, but the Rebels unleashed all their firepower in the last quarter with a 23-9 run that wiped out what had been a tied game at the end of three quarters 49-49. Schmidt and Ah Wang combined for 20 of those points and all the Eagles could do was shake their heads in disbelief as their season came to an abrupt end. Barbara Teakle and Leonie Snowdon hit 11 each for the Eagles and Greta Hollis-Stephensen and Katherine Hollis chipped in with 10 each, but it just wasn’t enough to counter the streaking Rebels. The win was also a celebration of another Rebel cracking the 400 game mile stone. Chantelle Lee played her 400th League game and the Grand Final will be her 14th for the only club she has been with. Chantelle is also the only Rebel player to participate in all Rebel Grand Finals since 1995. During the regular season the Rebels defeated the Jets three times out of four games, but lost the last game of the season and the major semi.

Preliminary Final

League MEN –Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels 86-57 win against the Tracy Village Jets brought to an end a modern day record that has been the envy of all League teams for the past 12 years. Since 1997 the Jets have been in every Challenge Season Grand Final and they won six of them. The end of the record run was prompted by the dynamic scoring duo of Andre’Moss and Aaron Ritchie who led the defending champion Uni Rebels into a Grand Final match up with Ansett this Saturday night. The lone scoring standout for the Jets was young Nick Pattrick who netted 27pts for the Bombers, but no other team mate reached double figures. Richie and Moss on the other hand shone for the Rebels. Richie hit a game high 31 and Moss added 25 and the pair proved almost unstoppable from anywhere on the court. Scoring over 20 points in every quarter the Rebels built on a 22-15 first quarter lead they never gave up as they cruised to victory. This will be only the third time the Rebels have been in a Challenge Season Grand Final since 1996. In three regular season meetings each team has won once and there was a draw.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 16-1-3, Uni Rebels 13-2-5, Ansett 12-2-5, Eagles 9-2-8, Lightning 5-1-12, Warriors 3-2-13, Razzle & 2-2-14

Saturday Grand Final:          Ansett v Uni Rebels 8:00pm
