League Women –Warriors v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels had no problems in dispatching the Warriors 60-31, despite fielding only 5 players for the round 2 game at the DBA Stadium at Mararra. Another Bonson has stepped into the breach made by injured Jaylene Bonson. This time it was Jaylene’s sister Jasmin who shouldered the burden of scoring for the Rebels as she racked up a game high 21 to lead the way for the winners (and she is still playing U/16’s). Jaylene Boundry added 18 for the victors as they kept the Warriors to single digit numbers in every quarter of the game. The Warriors were only down 13-9 after one quarter of play, but the Rebels rattled off 14 points to 6 in the next stanza to lead 27-15 at half time and never looked back. Jennifer Kinsella led the Warriors with 11 and got some help from Kate Smyth who hit 8.

Ansett v Lightning

Sam Drescher hit a League high 29 points to lead Ansett to a second straight victory, this time a 61-46 win against Lightning. Drescher’s game has definitely become more polished after her stint in the SEABL D-League with Kilsyth in the first half of this year. The Blues jumped out to a 18-7 first quarter lead behind the shooting of Drescher and Kate Hoschke (9) and cruised to their second win of the competition. To their credit the youthful Lightning did put up more resistance in the second quarter, outscoring the Blues 17-11, but after the break Drescher ignited a 11-8 run with three consecutive baskets to start the quarter, leaving Lightning further behind and scrambling in a effort to get back into the game. Chelsea Cook and Emma Carbone gave it their best shot for Lightning with 10 points each.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Tracy Village Jets knocked off the Eagles 61-43 to stay atop the ladder, but needed a hard-nosed defensive effort in the second half to walk away with the points. The Jets held a slim 35-30 lead at the half time break, but were finding it hard to contain Eagle newcomer Andrea Bellamy who netted 14 first half points. During the break, however, the Bombers readjusted their defense and from the start of the third quarter held Bellamy (18) to just 4 for the remainder of the game. The Bombers also lifted their own offensive game to out-score the Eagles 26-13 through the effort of Georgie Howlett who led the way with 17 followed by Annabelle Harbison 11 and Keisha Tinley with 10. Rachel Watchorn chipped in with 13 for the Eagles.

League MEN –Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

Aaron Simpson hit a career high 26 points for the Tracy Village Jets as the Bombers accounted for Lightning 83-71. Simpson was on fire in the first half, hitting 22 of his total before losing a bit of his touch. Nick Pattrick (15) and Liam MacLachlan (15) played their part in the first half onslaught, teaming up with a combined 21 points as the Bombers ran up a 53-39 lead by half time. Karsten Oltrop from Lightning lit up the score board with his biggest game in a few years, scoring 26 to lead the attack, but only one other player hit double figures for the Lightning, Jesse Bell with 12. With Simpson off the boil in the second half much of the slack was picked up by captain Michael MacLean (13), MacLachlan & Jake Geer who managed to hold the Lightning in check as the Jets rolled to their second win of the season.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Eagles and Uni Rebels provided the excitement for the night with the Rebels holding off the birds 69-62 for their first win of the competition. The Rebels charged out of the blocks in the first quarter for a commanding 22-9 lead as the Eagles failed to get into any rhythm. Andre Moss hit 13 of his game high 28 in the first half with help from Matt Fagg (10) and Marcus Ch’ng (14) as the Rebels took what looked like a handy 39-21 lead into the locker rooms. The Eagles, however, proved otherwise. They stormed back from a 41-21 deficit to make a real game of it, scoring 22-8 in the third quarter to trail by only 4 heading into the last quarter. Joseph Johnson hit 11 of his 15 points in the third during the rally and Buster Perkins (21) added 7. The last quarter was a procession to the charity stripe for both teams as the Eagles tried gamely to wrestle the lead from the Rebels. It wasn’t to be though as Moss and Ch’ng combined to preserve the win.

Ansett v Warriors

Ansett bounced back from their loss to the Eagles last week to defeat the Warriors 79-57. With Matt Hunt back on court at the point position for the Blues the Warriors were going to be in for a long night. Hunt (15) controlled the offence and in doing so gave Jake Feeney (16) and Daniel Florence (15) room to move and they made the most of it, combining for 31 points, most of them from inside the keyway. The slow start from the Warriors in the first quarter (23-9) meant they had to work extra hard just to stay with Ansett, but catching up proved too much of an ask as they lacked the necessary firepower. Player coach John Culbertson led from the front again with 15 points with Rob Oliver in support with 13 and Christian Williams with 10.
