League Women –Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Eagles claimed the scalp of the Uni Rebels in a narrow 61-59 upset win with young Michelle Friel leading the way with a game and team high 28 points. The Eagles inflicted the second loss in a row for the Rebels who lost a close one last week to the Jets. There was only one point in it after the first quarter with the Rebels leading 11-10, but Friel (18.4ppg) and Katherine Hollis (7.7ppg) led a 22-8 run in the second quarter that led to a handy 32-19 half time lead. However, the never say die Rebels charged right back into contention with a dominant third quarter, piling on 21-7 points despite missing two of their leading shooters in Tamara Sheppard and Jaylene Bonson. The Rebels held a 40-39 lead at the end of three quarters of play. The last quarter provided all the intensity of a playoff game as the teams traded the lead a number of times before the Eagles fell across the line. Justine Schmidt (6.8ppg) stepped up for the Rebels, knocking down 19 points and Jaylene Boundry (6.4ppg) hit 13 while Hollis added 9 for the Eagles in support of Friel.

Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets zoomed past Lightning 65-26 to record their 9th straight win in the DBA Challenge Season. The undefeated Bombers ran over the Lightning in a dominant first quarter 24-4 and continued on for the rest of the game in the same vein apart from the second quarter when the Bombers only outscored Lightning 9-7. Georgii Howlett (19.2ppg) continued her fine form with a game and team high 23 with support from Tikesa Docherty-Cole (8.1ppg) who hit 14. Chelsea Cook (9.5ppg) led the Lightning with 13. The Jets welcomed back point guard Sam Rioli who was out injured last week and Lightning missed the presence of their point guard Kelli Sealy (9.8ppg) who was unavailable for the game.

Warriors v Ansett

Ansett held the Warriors to the lowest total for a game this season when they won easily 48-19. Captain Eloise Drescher (5.7ppg) led the Blues with 11 points, but it was the overall team effort that set the teams apart. Jennifer Kinsella (10.6ppg) led the Warriors with 13 but without much support the undermanned Maroons were doomed to defeat from the start. A 14-4 first quarter lead for the Blues bloomed out to 27-9 at halftime and the rout was on. Amelia Shanahan (6.4ppg) also hit double figures for the Blues with 10.

Ladder:                               Tracy Village Jets 9-0, Uni Rebels 6-3, Eagles & Ansett 5-4, Warriors 2-7 & Lightning 0-9

League Men – Ansett v Uni Rebels

Ansett kept a firm grip on second place on the ladder with a decisive 85-52 win over the Uni Rebels. The Blues caught the Rebels off guard at the start of the game as they powered out to a 24-9 first quarter lead. Point guard Matt Hunt (17.5ppg) played a big hand in helping the Blues to forge a 40-27 halftime lead over last year’s premiers. The Rebels got back on track after the first quarter thumping and managed to hang with the Blues over the next two quarters, but the last quarter was almost a mirror image of the first as Ansett rolled past the Rebels with a 28-11 outburst led by Hunt and Tom Blake who nailed back to back treys early in the quarter to launch the scoring spree. Hunt led the Blues with a game high 20 followed by 17ea from Jake Feeney (11.4ppg) & Jarrod Sheppard (14.2ppg). Marcus Ch’ng hit 14 @ 17.6ppg for the Rebels with Jamie Hamill adding 11.

Tracy Village Jets v Warriors

The Tracy Village Jets scored more than 20pts in every quarter as they took apart the Warriors 98-74. A shootout between Jet Travis Ellis (26.8ppg) and Warrior Phil Collins (26.6ppg) was the highlight of the game with Collins (6 treys) winning out by one point 32-31. The support for Ellis was more than the Warriors could manage for Collins despite giving it a fair go. The score at half time favoured the Bombers 48-40. In the second half the Jets capitalized on the good shooting from Ellis, Brad East and Daniel Miller to pull away for their 8th win of the competition. Josh Potter added 11 for the Warriors with Rob Oliver & Ben Muvirimi chipping in with 10 each. Liam MacLachlan hit 18 for the Bombers with Miller on 15, Brad East 13 and Dan East 12.

Eagles v Lightning

The Eagles whipped the Lightning 115-58 behind the big scoring of Charles ‘BJ’ Benning (40), Buster Perkins (35 including 7 treys) and Joseph Johnson (28). The trio totaled 103 between them in the contest. Lightning struggled without the services of shooter Cameron Bailey (14.1ppg) and Ben Streeter and were behind the eight ball early on, trailing 34-16 after one quarter of play. Eagle import Benning (22.5ppg) was almost unstoppable in the keyway and he seems more confident with his game after struggling early in the season, something the Eagles will be happy with. Benning has averaged almost 31ppg in the last 3 rounds. Jesse Bell (19.5ppg) was the go to man for Lightning, knocking down 21 points as he continues his good shooting form and he had help from Brodie Hertel & Thomas Godwin (11 each).

Ladder:                   Tracy Village Jets 8-1, Ansett 7-2, Eagles 6-3, Lightning 3-5-1, Warriors 1-8, Uni Rebels 2-4-3

Next Week:            Tracy Village Jets v Ansett 6:15pm, Eagles v Warriors 7:45pm & Lightning v Uni Rebels 9:15pm
