League Women –Eagles v Uni Rebels

Trish Graham notched up a game high 23 points as she led the Eagles to a 63-51 victory over the Uni Rebels. Graham lit up the scoreboard from outside the three point arc with 7 treys, 4 of them consecutive in the third quarter. Michelle Friel (16) and Katherine Hollis (15) put the Eagles into the lead in the first quarter as the Birds jumped out to a 16-13 advantage before Justine Schmidt (14) ignited a Rebel charge in the second quarter that closed the gap to just one point at half time 26-25. The Eagles then took control in the third quarter with a 18-10 run, led by Graham’s accurate shooting, that put them up 44-35 with one quarter remaining. The challenge proved too much for the Rebels as the Eagles closed out the game with a 19-16 run that sealed the match. Delsey Ah Wang & Frances Fatnowna added 11 each for the Rebels.

Palmerston v Lightning

Lightning took advantage of Palmerston turnovers to romp home with a 58-36 win that locked them into a tie for first place on the ladder. Thirty six (36) turnovers led to 16 points that Palmerston could ill afford to give away. Jacinda Lambert followed up last week’s good showing with a game winning 21 point effort and she had plenty of support with three players hitting 8 points each, Sarah Hagen, Brittany Ward & Kelli Sealy. Palmerston (13/40 from the field) was just 4 points adrift after one quarter of play (10-6), but had to put in a solid team effort in the second quarter in order to stay with Lightning (22/77 from the field) who took a 24-18 lead into the half time break. However, Lightning put it all together after the break and stormed away in the second half during a 34-18 run to claim the points. Jillian Pytko led Palmerston with 8 points.

Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The Tracy Village Jets absolutely blew Ansett out of the game with a dominating 68-20 win that left no doubt that they will be the team to beat in this competition. The defensive effort from the Bombers held Ansett to single digits in each quarter while they powered away for their second consecutive win of the season. Sam Rioli hit a game and team high 21 with Georgii Howlett (14) and Demi Cubbillo (12) adding to the score line. The Bombers hit 39% from the field (29/74) to Ansett’s 18% (9/49).

League Men –Uni Rebels v Razzle

Marcus Ch’ng had 18pts, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals to lead the Uni Rebels to their first win of the season, a close fought 64-56 win against the Razzle. Ch’ng was supported by Jarrod Sheppard with 16 and Jake Kirby with 10. Cameron McKenzie peppered the hoop for the Razzle from outside the arc, hitting 5 of 15 treys plus one free throw for a team leading 16 points with Phil Collins and James Panton adding 11 each. Collins was as active as Ch’ng with 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 2 blocks, but it wasn’t enough to overcome poor shooting from the field for the Razzle who only hit 24% to the Rebels 40%. Big factor in the game was Razzle’s inability to stop the Rebels in the paint where they scored 42 of their points.

Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston

Tracy Village Jets stopped Palmerston cold with a 88-55 drubbing as the newcomers to the League failed to mount any serious challenge to the Bombers. Travis Ellis was once again on target hitting a double-double with 31 points and 20 rebounds and captain Michael Maclean chipped in with 11pts, 11rebs and 12 assists for a triple. Liam Maclachlan added 19 points , all from inside the keyway or free throw line (9), as the Bombers enjoyed a field day for their second consecutive win of the season. Palmerston struggled early on, falling behind 66-30 after three quarter time, before outscoring the Bombers 25-22 in the last stanza. Ben Muvirimi top scored for Palmerston with 15 (+10rebs) followed by Mark Hamilton 14 and Aaron Simpson 11. The Jets hit 42% from the field (35/84).

Ansett v Eagles

Ansett claimed bragging rights after their encounter with the Eagles. The Blues took honour’s with a 87-73 win led by a game high 27 points from point guard Matt Hunt. Daniel Florance and Jake Feeney added support with 23 points and 20. The Eagles dug a deep hole for themselves in the first quarter as Ansett raced to what proved to be a winning break during a 24-5 run led by Feeney who hit 11 of his total during the onslaught. After trailing 46-25 at the half the Eagles, with Timmy Duggan (19) and Joseph Johnson (12) leading the way, launched a challenge in the third quarter, outscoring the Blues 34-18 to trail by just 5 at 64-59 heading into the last quarter. But the momentum the Eagles had generated switched back to the Blues in the last quarter as they ran out easy winners with a 23-14 run once again led by Hunt who hit 12 of his total points during the blitz. Michael Pearce also hit double figures for the Eagles with 14.
