League Women –Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets made it 9 in a row with a 74-54 win over the struggling Uni Rebels. It was a tale of the tape as the Bombers put up 112 attempts to just 54 for the Rebels. Of those 112 shots only 29 fell for the Bombers, but it was more than enough to grab the win. The dynamic trio of Georgii Howlett, Sam Rioli and Kylie Duggan again proved a big obstacle to overcome for the opposition. Howlett racked up 21pts, 19rebs and a couple of steals while Rioli and Duggan also picked up double-doubles with 19/10 and 14/10. Jaylene Bonson (21pts 10rebs) and Delsey Ah Wang (15) tried as expected for the Rebels but there was not much support to be had from the rest of the squad. The Bombers only led by a point at half time, 35-34, but slowly pulled away in the second half. A 23-7 fourth quarter run wrapped up the game for the Jets who now look towards next weeks matchup with Lightning.

Lightning v Eagles

The Eagles claimed the scalp of second placed Lightning to solidify their third position on the DBA Ladder. The 67-56 win was led by Michelle Friel with 18pts,9 rebs, 6 steals and 8/14 shooting from the free throw line. The Birds flew out early in the first quarter for a 21-7 lead that they extended out to 42-21 at the break. Lightning fought back in the second half behind the play of Brittany Ward (23) and Jacinda Lambert (15pts 22rebs), but it was too big an ask to overcome the first half deficit. Trish Graham put up 15, Lillian Williams 12 and Elyse Videon 10 for the Eagles while Katherine Hollis grabbed 12 rebounds.

Ansett v Palmerston

Ansett ground out a 59-39 win against winless Palmerston to get back on the winning track. Lauren Flanagan lit up the scoreboard from outside the arc, hitting 6 of 8 attempts from the three point line to lead the Blues with a game high 18. A 14-7 first quarter run was enough to take the points as Palmerston failed to rise to the challenge from the Blues. Ansett hit 63% from outside the line and a total of 30% from the field. Alexis Hohipa from Palmerston worked hard for a double, hitting a team high 13 along with 10 boards while teammate Natasha Johnston lifted the ball from the Blues 7 times.

Ladder:                                           Tracy Village Jets 9-0, Lightning 7-2, Eagles 5-4, Rebels 3-6, Ansett 2-7 & Palmerston 0-9

Next Week Round 10:        Palmerston v Eagles 6:15pm, Ansett v Uni Rebels 7:45pm & Lightning v Tracy Village Jets 9:15pm

League Men –Uni Rebels v Ansett

Ansett hit a reality check in the form of the Uni Rebels who are presently on a mission to overahall the Leagued frontrunners. The Rebels upset the Blues 68-54 and were rewarded with a share of third place on the ladder with the Blues. The Rebels charged out to a 26-11 first quarter lead sparked by Marcus Ch’ng, David Mecanovic and Jarrod Sheppard and then cruised to victory. Five players hit double figures for the Rebels with Justin Eckhardt leading the pack with 18, Lachlan Headlam 14, Mecanovic 12, Ch’ng 11 and Sheppard 10. The Blues tried gamely to rein in the Rebels, but the lead established in the first quarter proved too big a gap to breach. Plus the Rebels were enjoying a 44% field goal shooting night that overshadowed the 33% by the Blues. Daniel Florance top scored for the Blues with 14 with Bryce Whitaker, Tom Blake and Matt Hunt all on 10 each.

Razzle v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets stayed in front of the chasing pack of teams with a 79-66 win against the Razzle. The Bombers hit 38% from the field thanks to the hot handed Liam MacLachlan who did his fair share of work in collecting a team high 23 points on 50% shooting. As with most Jet games the Bombers jumped out to a 22-14 first quarter lead and then did just enough to stay in front of the opposition on their way to another win. Travis Ellis (21/13) and Luke O’Hea (11) chipped in with support for MacLachlan. Razzle will be disappointed with their 21/44 from the charity stripe, but they did manage to get four players into double figures with Henry Bui leading the way with 16, Cameron McKenzie 15, Phil Collins 11 and Luke Kissick with 10.

Eagles v Lightning

Lightning enjoyed a field day in dispatching the Eagles 91-73. 46% shooting from the field to the Eagles 32% plus the bonus of hitting 21/26 from the free throw line (81%) was plenty to notch up their sixth win of the season which keeps them in second place on the ladder. Jesse Bell hit a team high 20 followed by Zac White (19/11) and 10 from Cameron Bailey. A 19-17 first quarter lead extended out to a 46-35 half time lead and from that point onward the Lightning managed to keep the Eagles in check, holding all of the Eagles to less than 5pts apart from Buster Perkins (29) and Joseph Johnson (23). Perkins and Johnson also grabbed double digit rebounds with 13 and 10. Lightning must now back up with a win against Ansett on Tuesday or slip out of second place.

Ladder:                                           Tracy Village 6-2, Lightning 6-1, Uni Rebels & Ansett 5-3, Eagles 2-6, Palmerston 2-5 & Razzle 0-8

Next Week Round 9:      Eagles v Razzle 6:15pm, Palmerston v Uni Rebels 7:45pm & Lightning v Ansett 9:15pm, bye: Tracy Village Jets
