League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

Tracy Village Jets outlasted Lightning in their battle of the top two teams in the competition, winning a close one 56-49. The Bombers are now 10-0 for the season after hanging on against the surging Lightning who got within 4 points with a minute to go in the game. The Bombers had flown out to a 15 point lead in the first quarter with a blistering 26-11 start, but then had to hang on as Lightning slowly but surely scrambled back to within striking distance. Tara Maxwell led the Bombers with 16 on 7/11 shooting (64%) while Kylie Duggan put up 14 and Sam Rioli 12 in support. Duggan also had 14 rebounds and 4 steals. The Bombers held all Lightning players to single digits except for Jacinda Lambert who was involved in all statistical aspects of the game…27 points (@55%), 23 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocked shots. But the late Lightning rally failed to get them over the line as the Bombers wrapped up the game from the free throw line thanks to a couple of freebies from Maxwell.

Palmerston v Eagles

The Eagles made hard work of a close 48-44 win against Palmerston, only pulling away in the last 1:18 min of the game. Palmerston had started the game with a solid first quarter, running up 14 points to the Birds 5 behind the shooting of Jill Pytko and Tess Hart (17 rebs). The Eagles fired back in the second quarter during a 15-10 run to trail by just 4 at 24-20 at the half time break. The Eagles put in another good run of 14-9 in the third quarter to take a slim 34-33 lead with a quarter to go, and it was game on. Palmerston’s Roanna Edwards tied the game up at 36 all with 6:44 remaining and then Alexis Hohipa (12 rebs) put them in front at 38-36 with 6:04 to go. Trish Graham then hit her fourth trey of the game a few seconds later at 5:42 to give the Eagles a one point lead that proved just enough to claim the win. Graham led all players with a game high 21 (including 5 treys) with Katherine Hollis on 11 and Michelle Friel on 10. Pytko led Palmerston with 14.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Sam Drescher led Ansett to an easy 78-32 win against the Uni Rebels who are now outside the four, a very unfamiliar place for the Red, White & Blues at this stage of a competition. The Blues ripped off 21 points to just 6 in the first quarter to set the stage and they piled on more in each and every quarter during the rout. Drescher led all shooters with a game high 24 (50%) along with 20 boards and 8 assists. Overall the Blues dominated the boards with a 56-32 advantage, plus they hit 41% from the field to the Rebels 23%. Lucy Adam was the lone standout for the Rebels with a team high 17. Drescher had plenty of support from Carla Jones and Lauren Flanegan, both with 15 (Flanegan’s points were all from three pointers!) and Amelia Shanahan who hit 12.

Ladder:                                           Tracy Village Jets 10-0, Lightning 7-3, Eagles 6-4, Ansett 4-6, Rebels 3-7, & Palmerston 0-10

League Men –Lightning v Ansett

Lightning handed Ansett their second loss in a row with a nail biting 78-75 win that landed them in a two way tie for third place with the Tracy Village Jets. There wasn’t much difference between the teams at the break with Lightning holding a narrow 45-41 lead. Florance (28 & 19 rebs) and Matt Hunt (27 & 13 rebs) were shouldering the scoring load for the Blues whereas Lightning had 4 players taking on the task with Zac White (21)and Jesse Bell (18) leading the way. After the break Lightninig put a bit of distance between the teams with a 18-12 run to push out their lead to 10 before the start of the last quarter. The game turned on a couple of missed free throws by the Blue’s Daniel Florance with only 41 seconds left in the game. The Blue’s were pushing to overtake Lightning after trailing by 10 points at the start of the last quarter 63-53. Ansett clawed their way back into contention and had an opportunity to get within a point, but sadly Florance missed his freebies. Tom Blake (10) from the Blues fared much better when he was fouled with just 21 seconds remaining and he did sink his two free throws to bring the Blues within one point at 76-75, but then Florance fouled Tom Godwin from Lightning who also sink his chances to put Lightning up 78-75 before Hunt let fly with a three point attempt that missed as the siren sounded.

Palmerston v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels got up over a tenacious Palmerston side 76-59 to leapfrog over a couple of teams into a first place tie with Ansett. After a slow start to the season the Rebels are looking to become only the second team to win 4 straight Championship Season Grand Finals. They are on a roll at the moment having won 5 straight. Palmerston proved a tough matchup in this encounter as Robbie Wilson (18), Aaron Simpson (13) and Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson (12) took the game up to the Rebels and actually led at half time 26-22. The Rebels stepped it up a notch in the third quarter running off 30-20 points behind the hot handed Jarrod Sheppard (15) and Justin Eckhardt (26) who combined for 17pts (5 treys between them) for a handy 52-46 lead with a quarter to go. The fourth quarter was almost even with the Rebels hanging one for the close win. Rebel Lachlan Headlam added 18 in support of Eckhardt while Tom Hemsley chipped in with 10 for Palmerston.

Eagles v Razzle

The Eagles broke their string of 4 straight losses by scrambling home 82-74 winners against Razzle. Razzle proved a handful as they desperately clung on until half way through the last quarter. At the start of the fourth quarter the Eagles held a slim one point lead 59-53 thanks in large part to new recruit Shronsdale Robinson who had potted 24 points through almost three quarters of play before he fouled out with 2 minutes left in the third quarter. Razzle were getting solid games from Henry Bui (25) and Phil Collins (24) who were keeping the game close with their accurate shooting and defense. With the game tied up at 61 all with 7:25 remaining Joseph Johnson hit a two pointer to give the Birds the lead and they gamely held on for the win. Buster Perkins took over the scoring with Johnson (17) after Robinson (11rebs) fouled out. Perkins finished up with a game high 27 with 14 rebs, 3 assists and 8 steals. James Panton from Razzle also hit double figures with 12 plus 10 boards.

Ladder:                                           Uni Rebels & Ansett 6-3, Tracy Village Jets & Lightning 6-2, Eagles 3-6, Palmerston 2-6 & Razzle 0-9

Next Week Round 11:   Palmerston vEagles 6:15pm, Lightning v Razzle 7:45pm & Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels 9:15pm, bye: Ansett
