League Women –Palmerston v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets rolled over Palmerston 92-31 for their 13th win in a row extending back to May. The Bombers were on fire from the start, powering out to a 26-7 lead that blossomed out to a 53-9 half time lead and virtually sealed the win early. Kylie Duggan (11.8ppg) took over the scoring chores from absent guard and team scoring leader Sam Rioli (19.8ppg) during the contest. Duggan (11.8ppg) hit a game and team high 26 points and was backed up solidly by Abby Cubillo (13.2ppg) who hit 14 points and Tania Dhu & Tikesa Docherty-Cole with 12 apiece. Christine Cooper and Shinade Douglas led Palmerston with 9 each.

Lightning v Eagles

Lightning handed the Eagles their second loss in a row with an easy 76-32 win that kept them in second place on the ladder just one game behind the league leading Jets. The absence of the league’s leading scorer in Kymira Woodberry (21ppg) due to a knee injury and Louise Johansson didn’t help the Eagle cause at all, but the way the Lightning were playing their presence may not have mattered. Four Lightning players hit double figures with live-wire guard Lucy Murray (11ppg) racking up 18, Starkitsha Higgins 16 @ 13.2ppg, and 12 each to Ashleigh Houghton and Deearne Lee. Michelle Friel led the Eagles with 10.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Twenty-two points from import Dana Rommel (10.6ppg) led the third placed Uni Rebels to a 68-42 win against Ansett. The Rebels charged out to a handy 23-13 first quarter lead that built up to a 42-27 lead at the major break. Ansett failed to meet the challenge and slipped farther behind in the second half despite the efforts of Sam Drescher (18.7ppg) and Chelsea Cook (8.4ppg) who hit 20 and 16 points respectively. Rommel had plenty of support from her Rebel team-mates getting 15 from Jaylene Boundry and 10 from Jaylene Bonson.

Ladder:                                                Tracy Village Jets 6-0, Lightning 5-1, Uni Rebels 4-2, Eagles 2-4, Ansett 1-5 & Palmerston 0-6

League Men –Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Eagles grabbed a cliff hanging 62-61 win against the upset minded Uni Rebels in the game of the night at the DBA Stadium at Mararra. Louis Ilton (16.4ppg) was the hero of the moment as he sank three straight free throws to get the Eagles over the line at the end of the game. The Eagles had held a one point advantage at the half time break 28-27 and luckily for them they had it at the end. The Rebels went into the last quarter with a slim 44-41 lead but the game was really up for grabs between the two sides. The Eagles lifted towards the end with Jarrod Sheppard (17ppg) hitting a three pointer and then a bucket that propelled the Birds towards the nail-biting finish as the clock wound down. Ilton finished with a game high 22 and Sheppard added 20 while the Rebel’s Matt Fagg (18.6ppg) had 14 and his team-mates Lucci Cornelius & Jermaine Lattimore (13.6ppg) hit 12 each.

Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

Lightning stayed with the Tracy Village Jets for one quarter before falling off the pace and in the end losing to the Bombers 71-54. A good start from both teams led to a 16 all first quarter score line, but the Bombers stepped up in the second quarter during a 27-15 run for a 43-31 half time lead. It was then a case of ‘catch-up’ for Lightning from that point onwards and they never did get enough of a run on to haul in the Bombers. Fifteen points (16.5ppg) from Travis Ellis, 14 from Michael MacLean (16.3ppg) and 12 from Jayden Niven-Trewin drove the Bombers to the win. Cameron Bailey (17.1ppg) had a team high 14 for Lightning with Keegan Dingo (10.7ppg) chipping in with 13 and Craig Martin 12.

Palmerston v Ansett

Palmerston added another loss to Ansett’s miserable start to the season, dishing out an 89-78 loss to the Blues. The win keeps the men from down the track in a two way tie for second place on the ladder. Twenty-six points from big man (22ppg) Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson, 20 from Eru McCullogh and 13 each from Jesse Bell (19.5ppg) & Robbie Wilson proved to be a big stumbling block for Ansett despite a season and game high 36 from Daniel Florance (24ppg) who was firing on all cylinders during the match. Palmerston held a narrow 64-62 lead at the beginning of the last quarter and slowly but surely crept away from the Blues, winning the quarter with a 25-16 run to claim match points. Jake Feeney from the Blues lent support to Florance with 15 and Matthew Barrett had 12.

Ladder:                                             Eagles 5-1, Palmerston & Tracy Village Jets 4-1, Uni Rebels & Lightning 2-3, Ansett 1-4 & Razzle 0-5

Next Week Round 8:                      Uni Rebels v Ansett 6:15pm, Razzle v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm & Eagles v Lightning 9:15pm. Bye-Palmerston
