League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Can anyone stop the Tracy Village Jets? It remains to be seen as the Bombers racked up number 15 in a row with an easy 71-43 win against a struggling Ansett combination. Point guard Sam Rioli and Kylie Duggan led the Bombers out in the first quarter with a 20-10 run and followed that up with a 20-15 run for a 40-20 half time lead. Ansett never mounted a serious challenge for the rest of the game despite a spirited try from Sam Drescher who hit a game high 17 for the Blues. Duggan hit a team high 15 with Rioli on 14 and Tikesa Docherty-Cole & Abby Cubillo on 9 each. The Jets remain undefeated this season and along with 7 straight wins at the end of the Challenge season now have 15 straight.

Palmerston v Eagles

Kymira Woodberry returned to the line-up for the Eagles after a few rounds off due to a knee injury. Woodberry’s returned inspired the Birds to a 62-44 win against Palmerston that put them one game up on Ansett in fourth place on the ladder. Palmerston had jumped started the game with an unexpected 14-6 first quarter run led by Christine Cooper who hit 7 of her team high 17 points, but the Birds flew back into contention in the second quarter with a 23-7 run to grab a 29-21 half time lead. After the break the Birds took control of the game with Lillian Williams, Woodberry and newcomer Marika Hart combining for 27 of the Eagles 33 points in the second half.

Uni Rebels v Lightning

Game abandoned and subsequently drawn due to suspected injury to a player which resulted in a call to St. Johns for medical assistance.

Ladder:                                          Tracy Village Jets 8-0, Lightning & Uni Rebels 5-1-2, Eagles 3-5, Ansett 2-6, & Palmerston 0-8

Next Week Round 10:                   Palmerston v Lightning 6:15pm, Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm & Eagles v Ansett 9:15pm

League Men –Eagles v Ansett

The Eagles and Ansett put on another epic battle with the Birds winning in Overtime 79-73. The Eagles had flown out to what appeared to be a winning margin at half time 39-29, but the Blues fought back in the third quarter behind Daniel Florance, John King and Tom Hunt to get within two points at 52-50 with a quarter to go. Both sides went at it hammer and tong in the final quarter, but it was locked up at 68 all, forcing the overtime. Louis Ilton proved he had the right stuff hitting five points in the OT, three from the charity stripe. Buster Perkins led the Eagles with a game high 24, Ilton had 14, new recruit Ernest Holmes 11 and Joseph Johnson 10. Florance led the Blues with 22, King ended up with 18 and Matthew Barrett hit 11.

Palmerston v Tracy Village Jets

Palmerston handed the Tracy Village Jets their second loss of the season (both to Palmerston), a 76-62 win that catapulted the Power into second place on the ladder. Jesse Bell continued his fine form with a game and team high 30 points with Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson adding 24. The Power held a narrow 42-35 lead at the major break, but they were having trouble in pulling away from the determined Bombers. In the last quarter with the foul count mounting up for the Power they changed from a man-to-man defense to a zone which caught the Bombers by surprise. The change forced the Bombers into shooting from outside and they failed to connect more often than not, surrendering the game to the Power. Michael MacLean led the Bombers with 17 with Phil Collins and Liam MacLachlan hitting 11 each.

Razzle v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels got back into the win column with a 77-65 win against a tough and tenacious Razzle outfit that just wouldn’t give up. Rebel Matthew Van Pelt (pictured) led the team for the second week in a row with 26 points, a season high, with Jermaine Lattimore adding 14, Lucci Cornelius 11 and Jake Kirby 10. Van Pelt knocked down six treys in his output while the team hit a total of 11 (for a total of 33 from outside the arc). Razzle held a 15-14 first quarter lead, but the Rebels charged back with a 24-12 second quarter for a 40-27 half time lead. The third quarter was furious as the teams traded basket for basket during a Rebel 26-25 run. Brendan Dell kept the green and gold in the game, but they couldn’t overcome the lead the Rebels had built up. Dell finished with a season high 22 with Billy-Ray Roberts on 10, Robert Oliver, Ben Cowcher & James Panton on 9 each.

Ladder:                                           Eagles 7-1, Palmerston 6-1, Tracy Village Jets 5-2, Uni Rebels 4-4, Lightning & Ansett 2-5, & Razzle 0-8

Next Week Round 10:           Eagles v Razzle v 6:15pm, Palmerston v Uni Rebels 7:45pm & Lightning v Ansett 9:15pm. Bye-Tracy Village Jets
