League Women –Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

Tracy Village Jet guard Sam Rioli racked up 17 points to lead the Bombers to a convincing 52-42 win against the third placed Lightning. The Bombers ran their winning streak out to 18 straight with the victory despite missing a couple of starters from the line-up. Rioli, who leads the Bombers with an 18.2ppg average, scored 9 of her total in the first quarter as the Bombers jumped out in front early with a 21-14 run. They extended that out to a 35-21 half time lead and then held off the Lightning for the win. Support came from Abby Cubillo (11.8ppg) and Tikesa Docherty-Cole (10.4ppg) who added 10 each. Lightning’s import, Starkitsha Higgins (11.9ppg) led the side with 16 while Kelly Sealy (7.1ppg) dropped in 12.

Palmerston v Ansett

Ansett squeezed past upset minded Palmerston 36-33 in an evenly matched contest. The score at half time was 21 apiece. Jennifer Kinsella (7.4ppg) from the Power took game scoring honour’s with a total of 14 with team mate Christine Cooper adding 9, but the overall balance of the Blue’s tipped the scales with Sam Drescher (18.8ppg) scoring 11, Chelsea Cook 7 and Lauren Flanegan 6. Three converted free throws near the end of the game sealed it for the Blues with Cook hitting two and Flanegan one.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels ran riot over a depleted Eagle outfit that was missing a number of starters including import Kymira Woodberry who is again nursing a knee injury. The Rebels took off on an 18-4 first quarter run that opened flood gates of biblical proportions, winning the contest 98-17. Dana Rommel (16ppg) hit a season and League high 35 points with help from Tamara Sheppard (19 @ 12.5ppg), Delsey Ah Wang (15), Chantelle Lee (12) and Lucy Adam (10). Best for the Eagles was Lillian Williams with 7.

League Men –Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The League leading Eagles put it all together against the Tracy Village Jets for a 59-35 win that extracted a bit of satisfaction considering the Jets are the only team to beat the Eagles so far this season. The Bombers couldn’t buy a basket and the domination on the boards by Eagle Chris Stewart played a huge part in the victory for the Birds. Stewart also held one of the Bombers biggest threats, Travis Ellis, to just two points for the game. Ellis is averaging 14.8ppg. The Birds had put together a 25-12 lead at half time, but after the break Jarrod Sheppard (15.1ppg) lit up the scoreboard, hitting 20 of his game high 26 (including 6 treys) for the second half, helping the Birds to a 34-23 run that sealed the win. Michael MacLean (15ppg) led the Bombers with 10, but no other Jets made it into double figures. Louis Ilton (17ppg) added 15 for the Eagles.

Lightning v Palmerston

Palmerston had to stage a second half come-back to overhaul the Lightning on their way to a 69-51 win that keeps them in second place on the ladder. Lightning bolted in the first half with leading scorer Cameron Bailey (15.8ppg) leading by example. Bailey hit all of his team leading 19 points in the first half to give Lightning a 35-29 advantage, but after the break the Power surged back behind Jesse Bell (21ppg) who hit 19 of his season high 33 as they took advantage of a momentum shift to wrest the lead from Lightning and in the end claim the points for the game. The Power outscored Lightning 40-16 in the second half. Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson hit 10 in support of Bell.

Ansett v Razzle

Ansett dominated their match with the Razzle, flying away for a 93-41 win that keeps the green and gold solidly at the bottom of the League ladder with no wins from 10 games. The return of experienced guard Matt Hunt to the line-up will add much more clout to the Blues point production. Hunt finished up with a team high 18, Daniel Florance (24.3ppg) & John King 17 each, Cory Whitaker 15 and Paul Johnson 10. Ben Cowcher (9.1ppg) played his best game of the season for the green and gold, finishing up with a season and team high 18 points, but unfortunately for the Razzle he was the only player in double figures.

Ladder:                                           Eagles 9-1, Palmerston 8-1, Tracy Village Jets 5-3, Uni Rebels & Ansett 4-5, Lightning 2-7 & Razzle 0-10
