League Women –Palmerston v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets women ran their win streak to 19 and in the process broke and set a couple of records on the way. The Bombers shut down the Palmerston Power 131-17 to break a women’s league record of largest winning margin set back in the 1989 Championship Season by the South Darwin Rabbitohs who beat Mitsubishi 119-13…a 106 point margin. This new record of a 114 point differential is the best by women or men in League history. The 131 points scored is also a new record breaking the one set by Lightning in their 2010 Challenge Season 126-30 win over the Warriors. The Bombers blazed the new records by keeping the Power under double figures in every quarter and by closing them down completely in the third quarter with a 24-0 run. Tikesa Docherty-Cole pushed her points scored average up from 10.2ppg to 11.9ppg with a team and game high 29pts followed by Sam Rioli 25, Kylie Duggan 23, Danielle Totham 18 and Demi Cubillo 10.

Lightning v Eagles

Lightning held off the Eagles 57-50 with a solid team effort. Four players hit double figures during the victory with newcomer Samantha Bastick leading the point scoring with 18, Lucy Murray had 14 and Emma Carbone & Deearne Lee both hit 10. Lightning held a 31-18 half time lead that fell away to just six points after a spirited revival by the Eagles who outscored the Lightning 15-8 in the third quarter. Michelle Friel led the revival by hitting 14 of the 15 points! However, Lightning clamped down on Friel in the last quarter and quashed any chance the Birds had of winning. Friel hit 18 for the Eagles with Louise Johansson adding 13.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Dana Rommel once again led the Uni Rebels to victory with a dominant 81-49 win that keeps them firmly entrenched in second place on the ladder. Rommel put up 27 points with support from Tamara Sheppard 18 and Delsey Ah Wang 17. The Rebels took charge early in the game with a 19-7 first quarter run that built into a 36-20 half time lead that the Blues were going to struggle to overcome despite the confidence shown by Sam Drescher and Chelsea Cook who combined for more than half of Ansett’s points…32. The Rebels lifted in the second half with a 45-29 run sparked by the play from Ah Wang who hit 15 of her 17 points. Drescher finished with 17 and Cook 15.

League Men –Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

Tony Halikos had his 300th game milestone soured by the Tracy Village Jets who dampened the celebration with a 74-53 win. Halikos scored 9 in support of Karsten Oltrop who led the Lightning with 15, but the Bombers took the game points behind the scoring of Jayden Adams 16, Liam MacLachlan 15 and Sam White 9. The Jets flew out to a 17-10 first quarter lead and then hit the after-burners in the second quarter with a 21-11 run for a 38-21 half time lead that Lightning never looked likely to breech. Halikos becomes only the 42nd man to play 300 or more League games since 1975.

Ansett v Palmerston

Ansett’s timely return to form has lifted them into sole possession of fourth place on the ladder. The Blues dumped second placed Palmerston 81-60 behind a scoring blitz by John King who hit a League and season high 41 points with help from point guard Matt Hunt (15) and Daniel Florance (11). Fifteen points from King and Hunt in the first half set the stage for the Blues to roll up a handy 44-32 half time lead despite the efforts of Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson and Jesse Bell who led the charge for the Power. King never let up with his sharp shooting, knocking down 26 points in the last half to help the Blues to their fifth win of the competition. Hohipa-Wilson finished with 19 and Bell 18. The stage is now set for a big blockbuster next Friday as the Blues meet the league leading Eagles.

Uni Rebels v Eagles

The League leading Eagles had to overcome a determined Uni Rebel outfit intent on upset by storming back from a 40-33 half time deficit to win 66-62 in the closing minutes of the game. Lucci Cornelius (21) and Matt Van Pelt (19) had seemingly set the Rebels on the road to victory with a strong first half showing, but the Birds turned things around with an uplifting 23-10 third quarter run led by Ernest Holmes & Chris Stewart that gave them the upper hand with a 56-50 lead with one quarter to play. With time winding down on the clock Stewart hit a bucket that gave the Eagles a four point buffer with only seconds remaining that proved in the end to be enough for the win. Louis Ilton top scored for the Eagles with 18 followed by Holmes who finished with 16 and Stewart on 9.
