League Women – Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Tracy Village Jets rebounded from their overtime loss to Ansett last week to run over the Eagles on Friday night 85-52. Abby Cubillo and Sam Rioli were back to their sparkling best guiding the Bombers to the win. The two players took team and game scoring honours with 23 points apiece. The loss last week has probably motivated the team into action… making them even harder to beat for the remainder of the season. The Bombers stamped their authority on this game with a statement 32-16 first quarter lead leaving the Birds well and truly behind the eight ball. Rioli set the tone in the first quarter by hitting 14 of her total to ignite the Jets. By three quarter time the score was 68-35 and the Bombers were back in the win column. The Eagles had three players in double figures; Kimberly Brown (15) and Trish Graham & Faye Armstrong with 10 each, but the support didn’t match up with what the Bombers had.

Lightning v Ansett

Former SEABL player Ashton Eaton backed up her 40 point performance in Ansett’s upset win last week over the Jets with a 38 point effort this week against the Lightning. The Blues won this encounter 76-44 and now trail the Eagles by only two games in the fight for the double chance. Lightning bolted out at the start of the game with a 16-11 run in the first quarter, before the Blues regrouped to breeze past the Lightning in the second quarter with a 23-8 run for a 34-24 half time lead. Eaton hit 14 of her total during the run. The Blues maintained their focus in the second half and powered past the Lightning 42-20 to claim their sixth with of the season. Sam Drescher added 12 for the Blues while Tahnee De Santis was the only Lightning player in double figures with 12... Bonnie Illingworth hit 8. Next week’s match-up between the Blues and the Eagles is shaping up as a must win for both sides if they want to finish in second place on the ladder before playoffs.

League Men – Palmerston Power v Eagles

The Eagles held off a determined challenge in the last quarter by the Palmerston Power to win the high scoring clash 98-96. The Eagles lifted off in the first half behind the shooting of James Silvie and Chris Hart who hit 42 of the 56 points for the Eagles who led 56-38 at halftime and looked to be in control. However, they were in foul trouble and it wasn’t helping their cause. Palmerston on the other hand did make the most of their trips to the charity stripe to slowly close in on the Birds in the second half. The Birds were pinged for 30 infractions to just 15 for the Power. Even though the Power hit 22 points from the line to just 8 for the Eagles they still failed to come up with the win. The Eagles did, however, hit 14 treys to just 6 for the Power…that’s 42pts to 18. The last quarter was all Palmerston as they clawed their way back into contention behind Deba George who hit 15 in the quarter to bring the Power within 2 points at the end. George had the last shot too, as time ran out, but it failed to find the bottom of the net and the Eagles happily held on to the ball as time elapsed. For the Eagles Silvie hit a game high 45, Hart had 32 and Reece Turner had 17. George totaled 41 for the Blues with Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson on 23 and Bradley Jachmann on 15.

Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Ansett insured themselves a spot in the final four with a 75-63 win over the Tracy Village Jets. Donte Nicholas led the Blues yet again with a game high 49 points taking his season total to 391, just 19 behind league leader Uni Rebel Tim Morris. Nicholas is averaging a league high 35.5ppg. The Blues launched their game plan early in the first quarter with four consecutive three pointers to open the game. Nicholas hit the last 15 of the first quarter total of 21. By the major break the Blues were up 45-31 against a Bomber outfit that just couldn’t get any momentum going. They picked up a bit in the third quarter with a 19-13 run led by Liam MacLachlan, but the Blues regained that momentum to reverse the score-line in the last quarter to run out winners. Matteo Rowse returned to the Blues line-up to hit 13 and Cooper Ehmer had 10. Alex Weetra & Travis Ellis shared the honours for the Bombers with 15 each, MacLachlan finished with 10 and Willy Foster had 11.

Razzle v Lightning

The Lightning have all but assured themselves a spot in the final four with a thumping 102-49 win over the Razzle. Six players made sure the Lightning were going to end up with the win by hitting double figures for the game. Cameron Bailey and Tony Halikos top scored with 22 each, Harry Fuge hit 16, Karsten Oltrop 15 and Thomas Maher & Dylan De Santis had 11 apiece. The writing was on the wall after one quarter of play with the Lighting leading 32-10. At the halfway mark it was 51-25 and the green and gold were not making any headway. Stuart Peace led the Razzle with 19 and David Carroll added 14.
