League Women – Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

Minor Premiers Tracy Village Jets finished off the regulation season with an 18-1 record after slipping past the Eagles in a close one 65-60. The game was a good tune up by both sides as they get to do it all again next Friday in the major semi-final, the one that will decide who goes straight into the Grand Final. This was a close one that wasn’t decided until the last quarter. At the half the Bombers led 38-29 and were in a good place, but after the break the Birds got on a roll with Kimberly Brown igniting a 17-11 run with an opening quarter trey and some solid backup by Trish Graham. The run left the Birds trailing 49-46 with a quarter to go. Keisha Tinley and Sam Rioli then quashed the hopes of the Eagles by knocking down 14 of the Jets 16 points in the last quarter while holding the Eagles to 14. Rioli top scored for the Bombers with 23 and Tania Dhu chipped in with 11. For the Birds Kimberly Brown hit a game high 26, Graham had 17 and Michelle Friel 10. One highlight of the game was Trish Graham breaking the women’s career scoring record held by Dahlia Docherty. The old record was 5931 points but Graham set a new one of 5939 after hitting 17 in this game.

Ansett v Lightning

Ashton Eaton led the Blues of Ansett to a convincing 66-35 win over the young Lightning side. Eaton put up a game high 24 points with help from Sam Drescher who nailed 19. Tamiyah Perkins also hit double figures with 10. Ansett took a 19-11 first quarter lead that blew out to 38-18 at the break after a 19-7 run ignited by Sam Drescher who hit 11 of her total in the second quarter. It was much the same in the second half. Bonnie Illingworth top scored for the Lightning with 11, Ashlee Walsh added 7. The two teams meet again next Friday in the knock-out semi-final.

Ladder after Round 21:                                Tracy Village Jets 18-1, Eagles 10-9, Ansett 7-14, Lightning 4-15 – Ladder includes forfeits

Next Friday Semi-Finals:                              Ansett v Lightning 6:15pm & Tracy Village Jets v Eagles 7:45pm

League Men – Eagles v Razzle

The minor premier Eagles easily accounted for the Razzle 102-58. James Silvie led a trio of Eagles in double figures with a game high 36 points. Reece Turner added 33 and Chris Hart hit 23. It wasn’t quite the tune up needed by the Birds before the playoffs, but they will get that tonight in a make-up game against the Tracy Village Jets who can still make the finals if they upset the Eagles. The Eagles flew away from the green and gold early in the first half with a 24-11 first quarter run that blossomed into a 42-25 half time lead. Rob Oliver (20) and Stuart Peace (17) were trying their best to keep the Razzle within striking distance in the first half but support from the rest of the side was non-existent. The green and gold put up more points in the second half, but unfortunately for them so did the Eagles who outscored them 60-33. Regardless of what happens tonight in the game against the Jets the Eagles will still face off against the Uni Rebels in the major semi-final next Friday night at 6:15pm.

Ansett v Palmerston Power

The Palmerston Power shut down Ansett 83-74 to deny the Blues the double chance in the playoffs. The Power left their end of season run for the playoffs just a couple of games shy. The inclusion of star guard Deba George made the team much more competitive and had George flown in earlier they could well have been in the final four. However, that is history and they have played the spoilers in this contest. George hit a game high 28 points with Aaron Simpson hitting a season high 26, Timmy Duggan 15 and Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson 12. Matteo Rowse led the Blues with 20 (including 5 treys), Donte Nicholas 18, Daniel Florance 17 and Jake Feeney 11. Ansett will play either the Lightning or Tracy Village Jets in the knock-out semi-final next Friday.

Lightning v Uni Rebels

Forty two points from scoring machine John King highlighted the 88-78 win by the Uni Rebels over the Lightning. The win also put the Rebels into the double chance position on the ladder when Ansett lost later in the evening. Twenty points from the charity stripe helped the Rebels to shake off the pesky Lightning outfit who put in a great second half effort to overhaul a 17 point half time deficit, but even though they outscored the Rebels 46-39 they fell short when it mattered most. Lightning must now await the outcome of the Eagle/Jet match tonight to see if they qualify for the playoffs and it might come down to percentage as to who goes in. The only other Rebel in double figures was Matt Fagg on 17. For Lightning Craig Martin hit a team high 25, Karsten Oltrop 12, Tom Godwin 11 and Tony Halikos 10.

Ladder after Round 21:                                 Eagles 13-4, Uni Rebels 12-6, Ansett 11-7, Lightning 8-10, Tracy Village Jets 9-8, Palmerston Power 7-11, & Razzle 2-17 – Ladder includes forfeits

Next Friday Semi-finals:         Eagles v Uni Rebels 6:15pm, Ansett v Lightning or Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm
