Round 12

League Women Thursday – Razzle v Eagles

Veteran Trish Graham lifted the Eagles over the Razzle 49-48 in overtime by nailing a free throw with no time left on the clock. The Birds had to stage a comeback to force the OT and then let out a collective sigh when Graham hit the winning free throw. The Razzle have been steadily gaining confidence over the last few rounds and are getting close to causing an upset to teams above them on the ladder. The Green & Gold held the momentum throughout the first half, building up to a 29-23 half time lead through the efforts of Erin Boyd, Lailani Triffitt and Kaylena Marimowa, but after the break the Birds put it all together to slowly narrow the gap until a last minute scramble by both sides ended up in a tie at 45 all. Boyd from the Razzle nailed a three pointer for the Razzle in the OT, but that was it for their scoring while Graham hit four for the Birds to claim victory. Graham finished with a game high 20 with Alysha-Marie Williams hitting 11. Boyd tallied 19 for the Razzle with Triffitt & Genelle Bridge adding 10 apiece.

Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

Tracy Village survived a scare from the Uni Rebels who pushed the Jets hard in an attempt at an upset. The Bombers won a close one 48-44 and had to stage a fight back to claim the victory. The Bombers trailed at half time 21-18 as the Rebels put together a solid first half behind Danielle Ponter, Edith Boundry and Ambah Kowcun. The Rebels were still ahead at the start of the last quarter before the Bombers hit the after-burners to pull away for the win. The Jets outscored the Rebels 17-9 in the last quarter thanks to former Rebel Delsey Ah Wang and captain Sam Rioli. Ah Wang took game scoring honours with a season high 23 while Rebel Ponter hit 13. The Jets hold on to their unbeaten streak for this season and now have extended it to 19 in a row since last December.

Lightning v Ansett

Lightning got back in the win column with a close 37-33 win over Ansett. Not much separated the two sides during the game. Kira Pendlebury and Sarah Carbone combined for 24 points for the winners while Elizabeth Paice and Remii Watts-Smith from the Blues scored all but 3 of Ansett’s points. Pendlebury and Carbone hit 12 each while Paice led all scorers with 17 and Watts-Smith had 13.

League Men Thursday –Lightning v Eagles

Deola Folarin from the Eagles lit up the scoreboard for a League high 42 points for this season as the Birds flew past the Lightning 98-75. Folarin hit 25 in the first half and with help from Dirk Steenbergen and captain Reece Turner the Eagles built up a 52-39 half time lead they never relinquished despite the effort of Lightning’s Craig Martin who put up 19 of his team high 26 in the second half. Steenbergen finished up with 18, Turner 16 and Ian Jong chipped in with 10. Martin had help from Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson 16 and Steven Ting 14. The win by the Eagles lifted them into a three way tie for second place on the ladder with Lightning & the Jets.

Uni Rebels v Razzle

The Uni Rebels ran over the Razzle 83-37 with Tyler Jefferson scoring a game high 31 to lead the way. The win keeps the Rebels on top of the ladder with a two game break on the trio in second place. This one was all over by half time as the Green and Gold struggled mightily to find the hoop, trailing 40-14 at the break. The Rebels took no pity and kept on firing away on their way to the clubs 11th win of the season. Thomas Uppena hit 16 and Brad Jachmann 13 in support of Jefferson while David Carroll & Ben Cowcher managed 10 each for the Razzle.

Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets demolished Ansett by a similar score-line to the one above 81-36 to lift them into a three way tie for 2nd place. Twenty-six points from Travis Ellis, 13 from Jett Sukcharoen, 11 by Rohan Cropley and 10 from court-captain Michael MacLean was more than enough to shut down the Blues. It was 36-19 at halftime. Fred Webb was the only Blues player to get into double figures with 11.
