Round 12

League Women – Thursday – Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets had to pull this win over the Lightning out of the bag. The Bombers won the contest 66-48, but the final outcome was still in doubt with 7 minutes remaining. Lightning had played the League leaders tough and held the lead at 42-41 after a bucket from Haley Hendricksen with 8:10 left to play. The lead proved to be the last one the Lightning had as the Jets went on a 14 point scoring spree in the next three minutes capped off by a trey from Erin Geer at the 5:07 mark. Geer (15.8ppg) led all scorers with a game high 20 while team mates Kylie Duggan (20.8ppg) hit 16 and Sam Rioli 14. Kira Pendlebury (12ppg) hit a team high 17 for the Lighting with Hendricksen (24.5ppg) finishing up with 16. A tough loss for the Lightning but maybe a little wake-up call for the Jets? One statistic stood out…the Jets hit five of their seven treys in the last quarter in the last eight minutes of the contest. Lightning had none for the game.

Eagles v Palmerston Power

The Eagles prevailed 55-54 over the Palmerston Power in one of the ‘cliff-hangers’ of round 12. The two sides had battled it out for the whole game with never more than 10 points separating them (more often than not it was 2 or 3 points). The Power hit 3 baskets beginning at the 3:48 mark to take a 50-49 lead with 2:20 to play. The Eagles replied with a basket from Sarrita King and then a three pointer from Trish Graham (13.7ppg) to give the Birds a slim 54-52 lead with just 49 seconds remaining. Bronte Hewett added a free throw to make it 55-52 with 36 seconds left before Haven Hohipa-Wilson (5.6ppg) from the Power hit a basket for the final score. Nail biting stuff! Graham finished with 15 and Michelle Friel 10. Haven Hohipa-Wilson had 15 for the Power with Brittany Ward (13.3ppg) adding 13.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

The second ‘cliff-hanger’ was played out between the Blues and Rebels with the Blues of Ansett holding on for a 43-39 win. The Rebels trailed 36-29 at the start of the last quarter and two quick baskets (40-29) by the Blues looked a sure bet to put the game in the win column, but a huge momentum shift to the Rebels changed everything. With 7:58 remaining the Rebels took charge and scrambled towards the end game through Jayelene Boundry (8.2ppg) and Justine Schmidt (7.7ppg) who led a defense that held the Blues scoreless for almost the rest of the game. The Rebels got within one point at 40-39 with just 54 seconds remaining before Tamara Sheppard (19.1ppg) hit a free throw and then Clancy Dorman nailed a two pointer for the win with just 24 seconds left. Tamiyah Perkins (13.7ppg) led the Blues with 11 and Sheppard finished with 10. Boundry led the Rebels with 11 and Schmidt finished with 10
