Results from Tuesday 29 September (round 12)

Women

The Eagles have continued their good recent form with a hard fought 59-53 win over an improving TV Jets team. The scores were tied with four minutes to go before the Eagles scored a couple of late baskets to snatch the victory and move back to a .500 win percentage. Megan Reeve was a clear standout for the Eagles finishing with 25 points while Patricia Graham returning after a week absence was onsong from outside hitting five three pointers to finish with 15 points, including a clutch three late in the game. For the TV Jets Jess Eason again contributed in a big way with 18 points (including eight in the fourth quarter) and another big effort on the rebounds. The TV Jets will match up against the third placed Razzle team while the Eagles will have a chance to move into equal fourth if they can beat the Warriors.

Ansett have beaten the second placed Uni Rebels for the second time this season 66-53. Ansett managed to pull away with a game winning break on the back of a big second quarter in which they won 21-6. Ansett’s leading scorer Samantha Drescher bounced back from two relatively quiet games with 30 points, including 13 in the big second. For the Rebels Jaylene Bonson fought hard to get them back in the game scoring 35 points, however, the next highest Rebels member scored only six points. The Rebels now face a stiff task against the streaking Lightning Women (six straight) but would no doubt still feel confident as they were the last team to beat the Lightning when they won by 38 points. Ansett are scheduled to have the bye.

The Lightning women have taken the outright ladder lead winning their sixth game in a row with a convincing 70-42 victory over Razzle. Lightning started fast winning the first quarter 23-7 and Razzle never managed to get back in the game. Tamara Sheppard led all scorers with 21 points and was abley assisted by Megan Sinclair (17) and Claire O’Bryan (16). For Razzle both Brianna Graziolli and Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe led their teams scoring with 10 points. The Lightning next week will face a pivotal game in the minor premiership race against the second placed Uni Rebels while Razzle will look to rebound and hold onto third spot in a no doubt tough match against the improving Jets.

Lightning 8-2
Uni Rebels 7-3

Men

Uni Rebels have held on to the top spot on the ladder with a comfortable 68-43 win over Ansett. The Rebels jumped out to an early lead and by half-time led 43-20 in a physical contest in which both team’s big men played some strong defense on the inside. Nick Freer was again the top scorer for the Rebels but had a quieter night by his standards with 21 points. Jarrod Sheppard scored 13 and new Rebels big man Nathan Crombie contributed 11. Daniel Florence returning from SA during the holidays fought hard on both ends of the floor and finished with a team high 12 points. The Uni Rebels will next week face off against the third placed Lightning in what shapes as the match of the round in the men’s competition, while Ansett will have a week off with the bye.

Lightning have overcome a relatively slow first half to run away 84-62 winners over Razzle. Razzle showed some strong fight in the first half searching for their first win of the season going into the break down by just one point, but they couldn’t stop the Lightning offense in a critical third quarter in which Lightning won 31-13. Chris Charman had one of his best games this season leading all players in the scoring with 19 points (including five 3-pointers) and he was well supported by the rest of his team who all managed at least four points. Razzle can no doubt take some positives from this game, particularly on the offensive side with four players scoring in double digits (Jess Angus 15, Richard Foster 12, Kyle Webb 12 and Alan Watson 11). Lightning who have  won three in a row will face their toughest test in recent weeks against the first placed Uni Rebels while Razzle will face a big challenge against the TV Jets.

TV Jets have consolidated their second place spot with a big 109-59 victory over a struggling Eagles side. The Eagles are now sitting with a 2-8 record and are in big danger of missing the playoffs if they can’t turn things around quickly. The TV Jets had contributions all over the floor as they ran wild on the offensive end with all seven players scoring at least eight points, led by Travis Ellis with a game high 21. Timmy Duggan returning after missing last weeks game for the Eagles scored 19 but it was not nearly enough to get his team close to the Jets. The TV Jets will face Razzle next week while the Eagles face a crunch game against the Warriors.

Men’s Ladder:
Uni Rebels 9-1
Tracy Village Jets 9-2
Lightning 7-3
Warriors 5-5
Ansett 4-7
Eagles 2-8
Razzle 0-10

Round 13 - Tuesday 6th October:
6:15pm – Razzle v TV Jets (court 2)
7:45pm – Eagles v Warriors (court 1)
9.15pm – Lightning v Uni rebels (court 2)
Ansett have the bye
