Champion Season

28 July to 12 December 2009

Results from Tuesday 24 November (round 21…final round!)

Women

Lightning have warmed up for the finals with a big 87-25 win over a depleted Warriors side. Claire O’Bryan (35) and Tamara Sheppard (24) starred on both ends of the floor to lead Lightning to the impressive win despite missing regular starters Lauren Sealy and Claire Humphrey. Peta Bailey was the top scorer for Warriors with 10. Lightning now face Ansett in the major semi-final in a search for a direct entry to the Grand Final.

The Uni Rebels have cruised to a 20 point win (60-40) over Razzle on the back of a strong 21-6 first quarter. Jaylene Bonson starred with 31 points and received strong support from Justine Schmidt with 12. Chelsea Cook worked hard for Razzle and finished with 15 points but after a slow start Razzle were unable to really put any pressure on the Rebels. The Rebels will face off against the Eagles in a do-or-die minor semi-final next week.

Ansett have taken second place on a tie breaker after an impressive 74-48 victory over the Eagles. Ansett finished tied with the Uni Rebels in second but won the tie-breaker (season series) over the Rebels 3-0. Sam Drescher (23) and Nina Randle (17) proved too good offensively for an Eagles team who only managed to field five players at the last minute. Despite missing numerous players Megan Reeve tried to keep the Eagles in the game with 21 points but the lack of depth was just too much for the Eagles to overcome the in-form Ansett women.

Ansett will now match-up against Lightning in the major semi-final while Eagles will be hoping the return of a few players will fair them in better stead as they are pitted against the Uni Rebels in the minor semi-final.

Women’s Final Standings:
Lightning 15-3
Ansett 11-7
Uni Rebels 11-7
Eagles 10–8
Razzle 7-11
Warriors 5-13
TV Jets 4-14

Men

Warriors have gained the psychological advantage over Lightning in a prelude to the minor semi final next week featuring the same two teams. In an exciting offensive game the Warriors held on late to win 93-91. Tom Leonard had a chance to tie it for Lightning towards the end but missed a close range jump shot before Cameron Bailey had another chance for Lightning to tie it with three free throws but managed to make just one after a strong night in which he finished with 25 points. Bayi Handy again led the Warriors scorers with 31 while Leon Purdue (20 points) produced five treys to make it 61 for the season, just six behind the new all-time record set by Timmy Duggan this season at 67 (Timmy won’t be in finals). If this game is anything to go by we should be in for a great game next week when both teams put their season on the line.

The Eagles have recovered from their disappointment of last week when they were officially eliminated from the playoff race by downing Ansett 87-79 in a good contest for both teams to finish the season with. Timmy Duggan scored 38 points including 6 threes, finishing the entire season with 67 made three pointers (a new League season record). Matty Bakunowicz produced one of his best offensive performances of the season finishing with 19 points. For Ansett Jake Feeney led the way with 21 closely followed by Tom Hunt with 16 in an all-round team effort where every Ansett player found their way onto the scorer’s sheet.

The Uni Rebels had no worries in extending their win streak to 15 entering the playoffs with a 101-48 defeat of Razzle. Uni Rebels shared the scoring around with five players scoring in double digits; Nick Freer (25), Jarrod Sheppard (17), Daniel Briglia (16), Nathan Crombie (14), Marcus Ch’ng (13). Jess Angus led Razzle with 11 but they were simply outclassed against the minor premiers. The Uni Rebels will now battle with the TV Jets in the highly anticipated major semi-final next week at 7.45pm on court 1.

Men’s Final Standings
Uni Rebels 17-1
TV Jets 15-3
Lightning 10-8

Eagles 7-11
Ansett 5-13
Razzle 0-18
