Round Sixteen– Challenge Season

League WOMEN – Ansett v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels were thanking their lucky stars after a double overtime 60-57 win against a Ansett side that refused to throw in the towel. At the end of regulation the scores were all locked up at 53 all with a number of players from both teams in desperate foul trouble. The foul situation was so bad that just 3 players from each team were left standing at the end of regulation. Ansett lost another player in the first overtime that ended up at 56 each. When another Ansett player fouled out early in the second overtime the game was called off with the Rebels in the lead. Uni Rebel Michelle Friel hit a game high 22 before fouling out with Trish Graham and Delsey Ah Wang hitting 13 each. Newcomer Amelia Shanahan hit a game high 21 for the Blues with Kate Smyth adding 15 and Victoria Uhlig 14.

League Women – Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

Lightning took another step forward in the contest for second place on the ladder with a 55-41 win against Tracy Village Jets. Claire O’Bryan was in good form as she potted a game high 26 points that ensured the Lightning a chance of the coveted double chance in the playoffs. The teams are tied on the ladder with 28 competition points each with the Bombers holding the edge at the moment with one more win than Lightning. O’Bryan had some support from Chelsea Cook who picked up 10 points to go with double figures in rebounds. A very close ‘anybody can win’ game turned into a Lightning win with a crucial third quarter run of 20-9 that put the Jets 45-31 in arrears. The teams played even in the last quarter, giving the Lighting their second win in a row. Tara Carroll led the Jets with 12 followed by Georgii Howlett with 11.

Ladder:                   Uni Rebels 10-3-0, Tracy Village Jets 7-1-5 & Lightning 6-3-4, Eagles 3-1-8 & Ansett 1-2-10

Next Week:            Lightning v Ansett 6:15pm, Eagles v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm, Uni Rebels-Bye

League MEN – Ansett v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets had another close scare, this time from second placed Ansett who were trying to be the first to hand the Jets a loss in the competition. But the Bombers kept their undefeated streak going with a narrow 67-64 win that pushed the streak out to 13 straight. Captain Michael MacLean led the Blue and Gold Bombers with 22 points and long time team mate Ryan Marshall added 17. Eighteen points from Ansett’s Tom Hunt and 16 from Cameron McKenzie made sure the game was going to be close as the Blues had four players in double figures, but it wasn’t quite enough to hand the Jets their first loss. The Jets led 36-30 at half time, but Ansett scrambled back to tie the game up at 50 all at the end of three periods of play. The last quarter showed the experience of the Jets with MacLean, Marshall and Kononen teaming up to make sure the Bombers ended the game in the winner’s column.

League Men – Eagles v Razzle

The Eagles put up some big numbers against bottom dwellers Razzle in a 114-70 landslide and crept just a little bit closer to second place on the competition ladder. Joseph Johnson put his points per game average up a couple of notches with a game high 30 with Shane Harrison (pictured above) firing home a season high 28. Team mates Henry Bui and Buster Perkins add 19 each. Getting a fast start the Eagles flew out to a 25-15 first quarter lead before piling on 33-13 in the next period to take a game winning 58-28 half time lead. James Panton led the Razzle with 25 points with Michel Tinley chipping in with 14.

League Men – Lightning v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels got good scoring from their newest additions to the team, Aaron Richie and Andre Moss, as they handed Lightning their tenth loss of the season. The 87-56 win by the Rebels (their first win in three rounds) and the addition of Richie & Moss, leaves them with an outside chance to overhaul the Eagles and Ansett for second place and the double chance in the playoffs. Moss led the Rebels with 27 and Richie finished up with 25 as they both showcased their talent. Trailing by one point after a quarter of play 20-21, the Rebels rambled back into the lead with a dominant 2nd and 3rd quarter in which they outscored Lightning 35-16 with Moss and Richie scoring the bulk of the points. Evan Browne and Tony Halikos were the only Lightning players to make it into double figures as the Rebels applied a lot of pressure with a smothering defense that limited the shots on basket by Lightning.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 13-1-0, Ansett 8-2-4, Eagles 7-2-5, Uni Rebels 6-2-5, Warriors 3-2-8, Lightning 3-1-10, Razzle & 2-2-10

Next Week:            Tracy Village Jets v Razzle 6:15pm, Ansett v Uni Rebels 7:45pm, Eagles v Warriors 9:15pm, Lightning-Bye
