League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

Georgii Howlett led the Tracy Village Jets to their seventh straight win, a convincing 75-38 effort, against the Eagles. Two other team members who joined Howlett (19.8ppg) in double figure scoring were Jenna Lew Fatt (7ppg) with 14 and Jordan Ah Sam with 10. The Bombers blitzed the Eagles in the first quarter, posting a 20-3 margin with Howlett nailing 10 of her team high 25 as they kept their unblemished streak intact. The Eagles lifted in the second quarter with Rochelle Briston firing in 9 of her 11 team high points, but after the half time break the Jets were off and running again, outscoring the Eagles 38-22 in the second half to cement the win. Saturday’s matchup for the Jets against the second placed Ansett should prove to be entertaining for both clubs vying for the championship.

Ansett v Lightning

Sam Drescher hit a season high 31 points to lead Ansett to a 65-53 victory against the Lightning. The scoring spree keeps Drescher (22.5ppg) in front for scoring honour’s with a better than 22ppg average after 7 rounds of play. Lightning kept Ansett honest with a committed effort in the first half, trailing by only 1 point at the break 31-30, but slipped away slowly in the second half as Olivia Birkett added point scoring in support of Drescher. Chelsea Cook (13ppg) hit a season high for the Lightning with 23, but she proved to be the only consistent scorer for the Lightning as they fell to their fifth loss of the campaign. Lucy Murray (7ppg) also played her best of the year for Lightning, finishing with 15.

Warriors v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels won their game against the Warriors, 62-46, but had to remain focused for the victory as the Warriors stayed with them for most of the game. Apart from a third quarter lapse when the Rebels outscored them 14-7 the Warriors were definitely in with a chance for an unlikely upset. However, the Rebels hung tough and matched the Warriors basket for basket in the last quarter to keep the buffer they had established earlier for the win. Jaylene Bonson (19), Trish Graham (11 @ 21ppg) and Justine Schmidt (9 @ 11ppg) did most of the scoring for the Rebels while Carolyn Nyhouse (12 @ 15.8ppg) and Colleen Hazeldene (10 @ 5ppg) led the way for the Warriors.

League MEN – Warriors v Ansett

Ansett took another step towards a championship with a 98-58 win over the Warriors that put them into sole possession of first place on the DBA ladder after 7 rounds of play. The Blues jumped all over the Warriors in the first quarter for a handy 27-10 lead and never looked back. Four players hit double figures for the Blues with Rashad Chase (24.3ppg) leading the way with 22 followed by Matt Hunt (17.3ppg) on 20, Daniel Florance (18.3ppg) with 18 and newcomer Adam Miller with 14. It wasn’t pretty to watch as the teams racked up a combined 53 fouls during the game that equated to 25pts for the Warriors and 22 for Ansett. The shock of the first quarter however, was too much for the Warriors who never recovered. Best for the Warriors were Emerson Nieva (3.5ppg) with 14 and Eric Klenke with 10.

Lightning v Tracy Village Jets

Michael MacLean got the double he was looking for as the Tracy Village Jets beat Lightning 77-43 to hand MacLean an extra gift for his 500th League game. MacLean’s career average stands at 13.88ppg. The win was spearheaded by Travis Ellis (29.5ppg) who hit 25 points to take his career tally to 7030 points scored in League games at an average of 22.3 points per game for 319 League games. Nick Pattrick also hit double figures with 16 and Liam McLachLan had 11. The Bombers grabbed a quick 15-9 lead in the first quarter that they turned into a 30-19 half time lead. They put the game out of reach of Lightning with a 22-13 run in the third quarter for an unbeatable 52-32 lead. Thomas Godwin led Lightning with 11. The Jets will be hoping for a win against the Uni Rebels on Saturday for a share of second place…if they win.

Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels continued their dominance of the Eagles with a thumping 105-68 win that gives them a share of second place on the ladder with the Eagles. The Rebels put the Eagles out of the game early with a massive 26-6 first quarter showing. Andre’ Moss (40.8ppg) took game high honour’s with 34 points (including 6 treys) with support from Steven Waudby (25 @ 18ppg), Jarrod Sheppard (17) and Matt Fagg (16). The Eagles stepped it up in the second quarter, matching the Rebels, but after another let down in the third quarter when the Rebels put together a 24-12 run the writing was on the wall. Buster Perkins (23.5ppg) put in another solid game for the Eagles with 21 points and young Henry Bui (13.5ppg) added 19, but the birds were left floundering behind the high flying Rebels who must be acknowledged as bone fide challengers for the championship.
